Working IT is a lot like being a firefighter.. you're ignored, and often many ridicule you.. until they really need you.
'Why do you guys need a new $500K firetruck?!? All you do is wash it!"
"Why do you need a new $200K SAN? Stuff works good now!"
Much like the firefighter, who you rarely see unless he's opening up fire hydrant to clean it out and make sure it works good, IT is ignored... until the **** hits the fan.
Sending 150 users to work from home. Yeah, I can push out a GPO to install a Cisco soft phone, a VPN connection so they can connect, headsets so they can call, and set up security on all this... like the fireman, yeah, I can get to the top of that building and spray it down.
I'm the Sr. Network admin in a regional call center. We do medical billing and insurance stuff.. so, lots of HIPAA laws, as well as financial info.. so security is a concern.
I have an awesome IT director who understood the need to update tons of stuff, and it's paying off now.
We have a lot of people that would be out of a job, without all the stuff that we've done the last few years... much like many would be out of a place to live without a firefighter.

Give a nod to your IT guy. He's doing his best. Much like a firefighter... and many others that are ignored, or ridiculed, who will step up in these crazy times and make your life better.

Been There before and under appreciated! I dropped it all because!

Garbage guys, I salute you. I always left a bottle of flavored schnapps and some disposable shot glasses out the pickup before Christmas, but maybe I should do that before the 4th too.

Plumbers, electricians, HVAC guys.. what would any of us do without those guys to call.

Also, those kids (and some older,) pushing those snot ridden carts back from the back 40 in the Wal-Mart parking lot, because some a-hole is too damn lazy to find a cart spot.

Thank you.

I wish whoever our the car carousels in the parking lot would grow a brain and stagger them, instead of having them right across from each other in each row

27 years IT project management.

Most of it in a 50,000 plus workstation, 400 server, 3000 switch environment.

I actually used to tell end users, especially supervisors- "if I'm doing my job right, you shouldn't notice me or the equipment", and "if that box on your desk isn't making your job easier, then something else is wrong".

Saaaaaaaaa-lute!

That's impressive. I now know who I can cry to when the developers need yet more drive space. :)

The magic of the Internet and all the IT People making it all work is really paying off right now with everyone staying home and keeping their distance from others.

Could have been a bad situation to go down to the DMV to renew license tabs and sit in a room full of 50 people waiting for an hour to get in. So went online, renewed the tabs, they showed up in my mailbox 2 days later. Pretty Darn Fast for the DMV, even they are picking up the ball to do things in a smart way and keep people safe. DMV employees don't want to sit face to face with people right now if they don't have to either.

Power of the Internet . . . ways to get things done and keep things going in these difficult times.

I have a customer that I get 3/4 of the way through something and she says "Oh I changed my mind, it's not that important so put it back like it was".

She pays the time, so whatever.:D

SIMPLY AN OBSERVATION .
Your not man enough to ---- me !! ----BOY !
