I was wondering if anybody new the type of material the factory put on our inner quarter panels in the trunk compartment. What's on the market so I can duplicate this.
Thanks, Larry

Don't know for sure but the undercoat seems to be a that like substance (smells like roofing tar when heated) that removes easily with heat and a scraper.

For looks I think spray on bed liner might be able to be applied with the same sloppyness as the factory. Just make sure it is paintable.

I did my trunk with spray in bedliner and it turned out awesome. You can achieve different textures with it depending on how you spray it.
You can get tintable bedliner to match your body color.

That stuff is ok if your just doing the inside of the quarters. If you want to do the whole trunk or areas that may get scuffed, I would go with a 2k product like Raptor spray in bedliner.

Appreciate the responses. Yeah my car has new quarters on both sides. I'll look into something like the 2k.

I used Transtar rubberized quick dry black undercoating on mine, works great, and it's paintable. It,s about $69.00 a gallon, not 2k just mix well and spray with cheap undercoat gun.....It is however, a ***** to clean up.....

Here is mine done with tintable 2K raptor liner.

Raptor Liner is really nice (I've used it) but it can get spendy and once mixed, you're stuck with using it right away. Similar to what others have suggested already, I've also used this undercoat from RestoRick. It says it's rubberized but actually dries quite hard and rigid like the original. Works really well too inside quarters and other areas: Restorations by Rick Kreuziger - Product and Component Restoration Detailed Information

That green trunk does look nice but I prefer a factory style painted surface. The back sides of the quarter panels are slathered with the thick stuff, that is fine with me.
Resto Rick sells gallons of the thick sound deadener. It goes on with a "Shutz" type gun. The closer you are to the panel, the flatter the material lays. Further out, it lays in a speckled form.

It all depends on what your going for. If your looking for OEM look then stay with the original style undercoating. Get some of the good stuff, not the crap they sell in parts stores.
The raptor is sprayed with a 3m shutz gun too and you can make it smooth or as textured as you want. I had a few patches to hide so I made mine have a little texture.
I have never used them but always heard nothing but good things about resto ricks products. I have seen countless testimonials and referrals over the years.
I was very hesitant to use the raptor in the trunk in fear it would not turn out good. The thought of having to strip that stuff out gave me nightmares. In the end I was very happy with the results. I only wish I had used it on the bottom of the car too.

Mine was factory under coat and striped most of mine to metal and Por 15 on the rust with there metal prep and etch primed the bare metal and Raptor bed liner. Not factory color but not going factory color anyway.

Looks good Fred. I have three more cars to restore. Im doing the bottom of them in raptor next time.
I would like to do an experiment to see how hard it is to remove after its cured. I bet a heat gun and a scraper would take it off easy. Im just thinking about the next guy who restores it after im long gone :)

I did a few truck beds with it and seems to hold up good. Iv'e tried different bed liners and replaced many truck box sides and floors and had to take off the old bed liner and redo it. Not that I know anything about it but if I can keep my car from rotting away I'll do what I can.
I agree the next time some one has to restore my car when I'm gone I would like to here him say atta boy you did a good job.

Yea I like how Mopar Mike did his looks great.

Hey Fred have you had the car out and about yet? Hows the raptor liner holding up? Difficult to clean? Just trying to figure out which way I should go when I get to my crossroads on the trunk here soon.

Not yet still in the garage and snow on the ground. Lots of work left to do but should be done by late summer. Painting my sons air plane in my garage now so my car is on the back burner for sometime.
The bed liner is I hope protecting it from mother nature when I get it on the road seems clean up on what I've seen so far is is not real bad compared to trying to clean up paint that has been chipped up or under coating that is softer and harder to clean. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks man I'm guessing if it got real dirty, spraying it with some all purpose cleaner followed by a nylon brush and a vacuum would make quick work of it but I've read different accounts online. Sounds like you can also spray it with lighter texture which would help with that. All I know is I'm in the process of scraping off the factory quarter panel trunk texture right now and this is definitely a job I only want to do once in my lifetime :D

I just used fatmat rattletrap *** for the whole car, lines the trunk and the deck lid with it. Then out a factory repop trunk mat down. Here are pictures of the main area but its the same insulation.
