That might be your answer. There will be some fluid that leaks past the bushing and around the splines but the seal should keep it under control. A loose tailshaft could damage a seal pretty quick though. Can you see any marks in the yoke where a seal rode in the past? If you can, it isn't in the tailhousing far enough I would think.
