Looking for suggestions on shock upgrades . Car will be used as a cruiser only . Sunny day ,car shows,
Thanks everyone on FABO.

ANything that will fit. I have Monroe hydraulics on one car and Bilstein from PST on the other. Not a huge difference between the two but the Bilstein are a little more stiff.

Depends a lot on the rest of your suspension. If you have stock, or less than 1” diameter torsion bars then you probably won’t notice much difference going to the Bilsteins, although they are a much better shock. A regular old set of Monroe’s would be fine. If your torsion bars are bigger than 1”, then absolutely Bilsteins or Hotchkis Fox’s.

Just avoid KYB either way, unless you want your car to ride like a dump truck.

I put Sachs shocks on the wagon last year. They're more expensive than Monroe or Gabriel, but nowhere near Bilstein money. I've been happy with them for a daily driver type ride, I think they are a better shock than Monroe or Gabriel.

And I'll agree with 72blunblu, anything is better than KYB. I made that mistake on my Scamp, the ride would be nicer if I welded steel tubes in place of the shocks.

Monroe Load levelers

Nope. Bad idea, just like air shocks to raise the ride height.

The shock mounts aren’t designed to carry spring load. If you need stiffer springs, install stiffer springs.
actually it doesnt, keeps the height leveled when i got a bunch of stuff in the trunk rides nice,
i have also had air shocks they do not compare at all air shocks are really stiff the car rides too hard. These ride great they are not stiff, just a little more stiff than the regular stock shocks.

There is absolutely no way around it. When you’ve got a bunch of stuff in the trunk, the difference in ride height for your car with those shocks, compared to regular shocks, is all load on the shock mounts.

Those springs are carrying the extra load and putting it directly on the shock mounts. If they weren’t, the ride height would be the same as with regular shocks.

If they don’t raise the unloaded ride height then they’re better than air shocks, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t adding additional load to the shock mounts. If you’re always hauling a bunch of stuff and your springs sag too much when you do, you need new springs.

Do you have the part numbers for the sachs shocks you used ?

And the coils will grab the fuel tank lip when going over bumps. (don't ask me how I know.) I peeled the tank out of my 65 Dart when bouncing over rough train tracks. It was on the highway and there was no fire but scary as hell! Back in about 70'

i have never had any of these problems on any of my abodys with load levelers, maybe the design has changed because i can compress the shocks when new they are no way rock hard, just a firm shock at most

I have larger T bars and wish I would have sprung for the Bilsteins. the KYB's will have to do until I find a different place to use these.
