So...... 12hrs to get the 8 intake ports roughed in to that point.
It adds up fast!!

“Shaping” ports is bad enough, but just making them “bigger” really eats up time.

Well I got 3 roughed in and found I was using the wrong burr for the job. I use a 6 inch shaft double cut burr for 85-90% of my porting work. I hate single cut burrs with a passion but I figured for this much hogging out I would use one. Big mistake. Like I said I hate them the way they jump around and dig in. I switched to the burr in the picture that I rairly use and I could easily rough in one head in 4-5 hours. My hands feel so much better using a double cut burr and I don’t mind the constant dipping in my WD40, transmission fluid mixture.

I use waaaaay more aggressive burrs than that for roughing in.

But....... they do require more of tight grip on the grinder or it can get away from you.
There’s more vibration overall when using them...... with the upside that they cut faster.

Like these:

Does anyone still sharpen carbide burrs. My long burrs are pretty beat up and I should get an order up for some. There used to be a couple of businesses that did resharpening work but I never sent any out to have done.

6.5 hours in the shop today without even stopping to take a piss. It’s not that I didn’t have to but when I plan lots of porting I put coveralls on and with slivers all over me I hate to risk a major accident.

yes you gentlemen need to take care of your hands I have had two procedures one on each hand to the tune of about $6,000 a piece no fun. Mainly caused by extreme gripping and hard vibration by vibrating equipment there are some pretty good anti-vibration gloves out there I would look into them .

I can honestly say I would never do this for a paying customer. Brett has a set of Edelbrock heads he did for Im guessing a super stock racer where the head had to come in at 170 cc runner and 2.02 valve. His buddy welded and raised the port so they could raise the runner. If I remember right it flowed around 280 cfm and cost between 10,000.00-11,000.00 to have done.

Sure would be nice if someone would whisper in my ear whose car these heads went on so I could check out their performance. IF anybody ever gets to go racing again.

Yes, but it might be cheaper to buy a new one if you are only doing one or two. I haven't priced this lately. My company used to do it internally.

Just as you don't want to use 36 grit grinding discs on everything, I keep a bunch of used burrs that are no longer very aggressive for use on soft materials or jobs that just need touched up. My newer, sharp burrs are used when needed.

How you use them has a lot to do with how long they last.

Thank you. I will read all of that next time I am on my desktop

I couldn’t handle the grinding mess any longer so shop cleanup time it was. I had so many shavings on my porting bench that I could have probably melted it down and made a fishing boat. Swept the floor, cleaned off the top of my parts catcher (cleaning tank) so I could scrub the transmission fluid and shavings off my heads and get some kerosene to clean my porting bench. Now I can actually see what I have to grind to finish these up.

Ohhh and my 6mm probe for my sonic checker arrived mid week from China so I put rubber glove on and open the box. Then I sprayed the plastic bag down with Lysol and let it sit for three days. Today I opened the bad and sprayed the probe down with Lysol and wiped it down. After I finish these heads I will check the Speedmaster head floors out to see where the water runs in them. I can’t believe this prob was only 35.00 delivered to my door. I hope it works

Well that was one boring 64th Birthday. I stayed at home like I have been doing with this Coronavirus going around instead of heading to Longhorn steak house and grabbing a Ribeye steak. I did some porting for a half a hour till boredom got the best of me. I’m sure most of us are going to fight some depression before this mess is over. Hopefully we get a nice stretch of nice weather so I can at least gets some of my Riverwalks in to get moving again.

Thank you Sir. I took a 1.5 mile Riverwalk today and it felt great getting out in the sun for awhile. Everyone stay safe out there.

Well guys it takes a lot to totally piss me off but I wish I would have never taken on this project of moving the pushrod over. Taking a break from port work I plunged a hole along the tube and opened it up with a porting burr. 5 on and offs and things still won’t line up. Grind some try it, grind some more. I’m getting to the point of just grabbing my best set of stock location pushrod heads and finishing up this damn engine. From the looks of things my son doesn’t want to finish up his car for this year anyway. And my piece of crap sonic checker I bought is about worthless and not trustable.

I had to edit this. I looked closer and now I see what you are up against. Maybe get a rocker with a bit more offset???

Hang in there cowboy and then you'll be ready to ride in no time, inspiration

Stay with it John. To quote Chief Dan George in the movie The Outlaw Josie Wales, "to endeavor to persevere".

I may send a couple pictures to Harlan Sharp but it’s probably not in my budget to get 8 new rockers. I gotta get my 422 out of my black Duster and this one in.

Other than the bolt boss for the intake manifold, what’s out there?

Can you just mill or grind all of what’s back there out?

I’m ASSuming those are,T/A offset rockers and you need W2 offset.

If I had a set I’d loan them to you.
