Unported head quickness?

A great question for another thread considering this is a thread on how people do it and how well they do it with unported heads and not an actual tech discussion.

People get too caught up in dyno numbers.

The dyno is meant to do 4 things.

1. a controlled break in
2. Proper precise tuning
3. compare changes
4. Tell you how and where it makes power

The actual number means very little other than to make the owner feel good and allow them to brag up their **** bag ride and overshadow their inadequate wee wee


IIRC 100lbs is worth a 10th of a second. Maybe it's a hundredth. I can't remember. It's one or the other.
 
My buddy’s totally stock Duster 340 is maybe a high 13 second car on a good day.
Sure if your running stock eliminator and have slicks a gear 12s are possible with work.
I was riding around last weekend in it.

fella's I could write a mile long manifesto on the @#$% I hear at track and cruise nights(rarely go anymore)
im still learning after 30 plus years of this stuff. way too many people get lost on just knowing the basics.
we all know them. money clown spends cash but doesn't how to tune. funny car tire'd bracket car makes to much power or complains track sucks then someone rips off small tire pass at 150mph in 1/8 n/t deal.
car show guy thinks his stuff is fast because he ran his neighbors,cousins,brother inlaw,etc,etc 9 sec red camaro!!!
list is endless. again im still learning by trying i.e. test,test,test. its so true about dynos and track. people don't like to be told that there hard earned cash was spent incorrectly.

I was told by an old friend many years ago some tips that are the best ive ever heard.
your first money spent after buying car is to be spent on knowledge. books,manuals,tools(learn how to read and use is most important)educate yourself first and keep all of the drama/drunk kings out of you garage when building stuff!!!!!

this works for ford and chevy guys, but damn there's a lot of this in the mopar world.

I started out in a heads up street car thing in my Dart we are talking late 80s I’ve had this car that long. Car ran 6.90 in the 1/8th
Class kind of fizzled out after 2 years.
Track adopted some heads up bracket deal 8.0 7.0 6.0 and so on, and the car would run 7.0 all day so there’s my class.
I ran that class with a 340 I drove half the time to the track 40 miles one way.
Stock ported heads, stock block, crank, rods, or course new bolts, trw replacement forged pistons. .557 cam for a decade.
Car is finally going back together with a new engine that should run 6.90 on the motor, probably mid 10s
We will know soon! This is just the break in engine. I have another I’m working on also.

I had a 318 in my Duster, stock edelbrock heads, 9.4 to 1 compression, air gap intake, headers, 750 carb, 3000lbs without driver, ran 11.70s

My daughter has an engine similar, but its a 340 a little more compression .497 lift cam, heavier car, and i went 11.72 and back it up with an 11.71 last sunday in her car.

sorry its taken so long to reply. busy,busy,busy. so I use sealed power rings,cometic head gaskets. P255-60-R15 mickey's et street radial(worn out of course!!)
I have always run small blocks. all steal car(except hood) and I hate doing body work. regardless of make,nose heavy cars don't do it for me. I try to achieve 50/50 weight balance and gutting a street car for bb, turns it into a rattling soda can. hence no body work(fender,doors,etc.) you can get a b motor close to same weight but lifting hood to show little magnum is the best. first drag pak challengers came magnums.
its not about total weight so much as is where's the weight. still lite is right!!

I talk to my neighbor about cars and bs all the time.maybe its my compulsion but I look at racing strictly from a mechanical point of view. certain amount of power to move a certain amount of weight a certain distance of measured time. of course its also based on what you can afford.!!

my setup is far from perfect. last years set up used no rocker arm girdle for example. I know I had stuff moving around.

as far as parts go with old combo nothing crazy. its just an air pump(engine)stock block obviously for magnum. factory forged rods,cast crank(I know,i know). stock parts can mean a lot of things. heads,cam,intake,exhaust,carb,cranking compression,little n20,etc are the money shot. short block is along for the fun ride!

my goal is a 9 sec magnum powered street driven duster,(4/10th's away with old setup) i'm going back to the garage to make it happen(pics to follow)

1974 duster
never have weighed,maybe tad over 3,000?
started as 380hp 360 magnum.
put on edelbrock heads right out of box. no work!
single plane intake(hard to get) with reworked 750 hp holly proform body,etc,etc
comp cam roller to my spec.. I know everyone wants specs!!!!
nx single plate with 200+ shot at the hit.
foot brake with turbo action convertor. been running for years, 2500-3000 stahl
904 with work.
3.55 with 8 3/4 moser stuff
cal tracs and shocks
qa1 front except k frame
10 to 1 but cranking compression makes power!!!!
junk headers with dynomax bullets
10:50's all day in the summer heat. has run high 10:30's on one occasion in cold but I couldn't repeat rest of season-----fluke deal!!??
mid to high 120's and regular great 60 foot times if it holds the tire! yes I do drive the @#$% out of it. give all my neighbors rides when its time for gas!!View attachment 1715422068

building a nasty, as one can get with a magnum, deal. hope it stays together
quick update on 5.9l magnum. still stock bore/stroke. stroker build is temporarily on hold.
first cam spec is very close to comp grind 20-811-9 with 1.65 rockers basically I refreshed old combo but added cnc heads/intake/more cam/tti headers.

I would love to see the improvement made. I don’t really care for the update without results. It sounds great, no results. Boooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

20-811-9 is shelf grind from comp cam. listed on line from just about everyone.

duration 224 intake/230 exh. nice n2o cam rocker ration is your choice.
this cam is really a good deal assuming rest of car is set up to use it.
I have used this cam and others with unported heads. I. e. last build that I have posted before(10 sec unported)
as far as update, just killing time and thought guys might like to check it out.
as you can see from pics its not ready to run. results will happen when its running.

On your cam, I have that Hyd. roller in the wife’s 360. I like this cam a lot. Works really well with ported heads and 1.6 rockers. An excellent daily driver cam.

I love that “Unported head quickness” thread for even cheaper results and routes to getting it done.

took a stock 2006 5.7 hemi added a used hughes 480 lift camshaft and lifters bolted on a modman intake and an enderle injector and pump.
Transmission 727 with a few upgrades (no trans brake) that my mechanic built, bought a used chinese 4500 stall converter
Car is a 2950lb 67 Barracuda with 12pt cage, ladderbars and alterkation front end. Willwood brakes. 8 3/4 with 4.56 gears and 13x30.5x15 MT slicks
Ran a 10.90 first run then a 10.71 two runs later at 6700rpm! motor really spins fast!
Decided to slow it down to 11.35 and 6000 rpm so it would not blow up.

Since then totally rebuild motor with Hughes stroker kit and a used blower running 10% overdrive. Had new seats installed in the head rest is still stock. Had Dave at Hughes cut me a custom cam (specs I will look up and post soon) Bought a new torque converter, 5500 stall but it is slipping real bad.
First three runs high 9's low 10's but redline at 7500 bumped up rev limit to 7800 still no better.
bought a new set of slicks 12x33x15 and installed 4.10's ran 9.32 @ 122 mph had to let off at just over half track due to rev limiter again. Torque converter is going back for a re cut . Hope to see 8.80 in the future. Oh ya I leave off idle and lift the tires for about 60-80ft.

Here is the info on my new cam

SER3842MHLN-114+4, which would be 238* intake duration @0.50 (.360 lobe) and 242* exhaust duration @ 0.50 (.367 lobe) It would have a 114* lobe seperation angle and have 4* advance ground it.
