Van Nuys Cruise Night

Very seldom did we see "low riders" on Van Nuys Blvd when I was living down there. San Fernando Rd was their playground of choice and the hot rod crowd respected that. Did see 1 that I remember  He was at the signal on a cross street ahead of me, like 2nd or 3rd in line. His light changed to green, cars ahead of him leave, he starts hoppin'. Keeps hoppin', kinda moving in a diagonal fashion towards the sidewalk. Somehow it got away from him and it just kept hoppin' much to his dismay . I could see it dragging the rear tires as it hopped. That '64 Impala set itself down right on top of a fire hydrant . I felt sorry for the guy, but there wasn't anything I could do to help, I wasn't driving a wrecker:lol:.

Richmond, Va. it was Broad St. hands down. Hard to believe that all ended about 30 years ago.... Yeah, there were times when some got rowdy but it all fairness it was a legit place to go on the weekends. But ultimately people acting a fool' ended it.

I was lucky enough to enough it when I got my license though it was on the tailend. But with the way society acts today and the amount of disrespect the younger generation has for authority and such I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole if it came back tomorrow....

Was there several years ago on a Wednesday evening. Saw just everything imaginable. Even saw some celebs out in their junk. WE stopped a diner on the main part. There was the guy who played Mini Me hangin with some low rider guys

Downtown Franklin Indiana. I think gas dipped down to 0.56 for leaded the summer of ‘86. That’s where the girls were, but I think I remember a lot of nice old cars too. Man what I’d give to be back there one more time.
I lived one town north, where Bob Glidden was from.

Grew up in a town of 14,000 people...we would hang out in Big Creek park during the day then cruise Main street and hang out in the JC Penny's parking lot, making trips up and down Main street and out of town to race, or "whatever"...lots of racing...and "whatever". Had to be out of Penny's parking lot at 10pm so then we would go hang out at Hardees...they had a huge side lot and rarely had any customers at that time of night...Lots of good times!!!

Whittier Blvd until 1979

I couldn't find any photos with better cars, but this is about the period of time my road runner and I could be found there

Back in the 70's....we had two main hang-outs on Gratiot. 12 mi. Burger King, and up the road a couple miles was Sambo's. We'd get a new place for a week or two, but they didn't last long. The cops always kept things moving, and the city of Roseville were the biggest dickheads.

Tophat was right around 12 mile. We used to hang out at the Burger King @ 12 mile, also Eastgate shopping center @ Frazho.
just before my cruising days was Jupiter’s in East Detroit, the saying was if you didn’t have over 400 cubes under the hood dont bother entering the lot..

Cruisin the "graph". Telegraph between Hines Drive and Schoolcraft. 3 to 4 lanes, lots of light to lights. Edward Hines Dr was build by Henry Ford so he would have a nice drive into Dearborn, Mi where the Ford Headquarters were. That drive had parks all along both sides for miles!! Saturday afternoon was hanging out at the park, putting a mirror wax job on your ride, Saturday evening was sorting out the pecking order. Sveden House had 700 cars parked at one time, everything from project wannabe's to shouldn't be on the street wheelie bar sporting window shakers. Days are gone but the memories remain!

What a neat thread. I grew up in Baltimore Maryland. i remember cruising the Circle drive in and the Thunderbird in Essex/Dundalk area. Knacks Dairy Queen in Ft Mead or near it was another hot spot. Days gone by our kids will never experience. Later on there was a spot around BWI airport everyone meet at. I imagine all those places are gone.

I was born and raised in a very small town. Not too much, really, for hangouts. So far as I know, the schools indoor facilities such as the gym were not open after hours for students unless you were part of some team, etc, or other school sanctioned activity. We had a couple of nice parks, and there is a nice baseball field and some other smaller fields and parks. But the "downtown drag......................"

Below the beach, which is to the right (east) of the downtown loop, below it. This looks like a loop and it was, when I was a kid. But now that is partially blocked off, and you go down along the left side of the photo, and the loop is blocked just past the boat ramp at the bottom

Downtown loop. Not very big. VERY screwed up nowadays. They have small shops, constricted, and diagonal parking along first avenue. They constructed a highway bypass N-S along the E side, so there is somewhat less traffic in town, but the "city fathers" have enacted a TERRIBLE "traffic pattern."

This used to be Haviland and Holzmer and it was several brands. Standard, I think, Enco, and I think Chevron. No idea what it is now, not a gas station
H&H.png

This used to be Tillberg's Chevron at Pine and Cedar. There was at LEAST THREE TIMES that someone forgot to turn off the pumps after closing!!!!
HalsTexaco.jpg

I believe this is where Don's drive in used to be, a favorite shake/ burger/ etc and also indoor seating.

Cochran's Chevron at 5th and Cedar

Used to be Hals Texaco, across from the Chevron above.

The winter before I left for the Navy, one night a friend and I were just cruisin around and started to count up area service stations, which included about a mile "out of town on the outskirts. We also ended up counting churches. I don't remember who "won" but there were, as I remember, about 20 of each.

Used to be Pennys (left) and Safeway groceries (right)

This is a "dead end" corner, facing N and turning left W. Before Mom and Dad were married, Mom worked at Pennys. Dad had some old car, was going down first ave, and the REAR wheel came off, PASSED him, and rolled up and broke one of the big windows in the store. So Dad had to go in and negotiate with the manager about how to pay for the window

This corner used to be Dalbys Shell, next to the corner of Pennys above, and originally was one of the tiny little metal prefab "Signal" gas stations.

Somewhere in here was the state liquor store. I did not see it, but sometime some local logger with an over-length load, came around the corner, overhung the sidewalk with logs, and took out a window in the liquor store.

A few years earlier, the city had this street stupidly in "4 lane." A truck going the OTHER way around the corner, and some dummy (teenager) tried to turn the corner inside of the truck, which had to have both lanes and then some. The kid was not hurt but it made a mess

"Dari Delight"

This building is unrecognizable. At one time it was one of the 'standardized' "Dari Delights" with huge ice cream cone shaped sign. Not long before I went into the Navy, the then assistant Chief of Police owned it and modified it some, and it's been remodeled about twice since. The original building is "still inside somewhere"

Old photo of "Don's Drive In" the drive up is on the other side, this is the cafe side

Police station My senior year and until I joined the Navy, I worked as a "radio operator" (now dispatcher) about this time. The teletype, much hated by the staff was gone by the time I was there

Below, I spent time here!! The old radio was on what they call "low band VHF" which is 30-50mhz, just above CB and the Amateur 10 meter band. So yeh, it can skip. In the summer you could sometimes hear far off systems.

Along with the radio, there were TWO count them TWO phone lines!! We handled the ENTIRE CITY HALL!!! The treasurer, water dept, library, I have forgotten what else. There was a judge and traffic court there as well. TWO phone lines!!! I believe part of the offices had their own dedicated lines, but public incoming so far as I know, all came in to "us"

Peter’s Drive In, Kansas City Kansas. Just like American Graffiti.

Well, the town I grew up in might be a little more like American Graffiti..... George Lucas grew up here & made a little film about the cruise scene in his/my town when he was growing up... Perhaps you've heard of it...

"I lived between Lebanon ky. And campbellsville ky., cruised both, we would hang out at the TG&Y parking lot in Lebanon until the cops would run us off, then go cruise Campbellsville and hang out at the Burger Queen, its still there, it switched to Druthers in the 80's and is the last one left, still in business.

I grew up (and still go 5 of 6 weekends a year) going to Green River lake and have gone and still go to that Durther's.

Grew up near Akron, Ohio. We'd cruise down to a shopping center parking lot on Arlington Rd in Akron. Plenty of cars would show up. But sometimes so did the local law officers. And they'd ask us to leave.

One night, I had only been there about 5 min and a police is clearing people out and comes to me and asks why I hadn't moved to leave. Told him I had just gotten there and the car (my 69 Charger) wouldn't even think of restarting until it had sat for maybe 20 min (vapor lock). So he "helped" me by waiting by me until I cranked it up and left about 10 min later. I was lucky I got it to start that fast!

Anybody else remember the Arlington Road cruise scene?

When I was a teenager in the 70's, I used to go out with a girl from Auburn Washington when I was living in Vancouver BC. I'd cruise down on the weekends and pick her up and drive down to Renton and cruise the loop. It was like American Graffiti +10 years. Good times. I believe they still cruise the loop there.
