Ok, so! i have a stock 66 2 door dart. It has a 225 slant six, all original accept the hood and right front fender. I ordered front brake drums, and shoes. Turns out the drums are 3 1/2" wide. My factory are smaller, and the question is; what has this size of drum and is it an easy swap? Do I just need the backing plate? It is only about a half inch wider which would be an improvement in my book!! Any feedback on this would be appreciated!

I dont know what you ordered, But your 66 Dart with slant 6, if original has the small 9 inch drums, and 13 inch wheels. Lots of guys swap them out to front disc brakes. You can swap them to the Kelsey-Hayes, 4 inch wheel bolt pattern, or to the 73 up 4.5 inch bolt pattern. Your 13 inch wheels will not fit the 4.5 bolt circle, Im not sure about the Kelsey-Hayes set up.
Another swap you could change to, is 10 inch front drums, with 4 inch bolt pattern.
What ever you choose you will have to change the spindle, and bearings for that brake style. For the 4.5 type you will have to change the upper control arms also. Thier is more but i cant think of it all.
Do a search in this forum, thier are lots of threads about swaping out front brakes.

I hope I havnt confused you Its not that hard.

If you still have your old parts, just compare the new to the old. If they don't match then you have the wrong parts. IIRC, your car should have 9" X 2-1/2" in the front, 9" X 2" rear . Measured across the face of the shoes and inside of the drum. Not the outside.

Your first upgrade would be 10" A-body drums. Next step would be K-H discs. Both retain the small 5x4" bolt pattern.

The biggest Chrysler drum brakes I remember were 11" X 3" on the front of some 60's c-bodies and hi-po b-bodies.

3-1/2? Never happened.

3 1/2" brake shoes --- other than Big Trucks that get up to 6" wide !!!!!!
Only one car EVER used ----- 11" x 3 1/2" brake shoes ----- the 1958 - 1960 Lincoln !!!!!!

Mopars widest shoe ever --- was the 11" x 3".....

I think what he is measuring is the overall total
Height......(my guess...)

The nominal brake size is the inside diameter by the lining width (not drum width).
These are in the back of the Service Brake Chapter of the Dodge Service manual. Download a copy and/or buy a copy.

Shoes are stamped with a Friction manufacturer's frame number.
It will look like this. This number is not what you'll find on your car, just an example.

Some replacement part manufacturers use the FMS in their part number. Some do not. But its a way to check that you have the right one, and also a way to ask for the correct ones at a real parts store or brake reliner.

You can pick up some additional info and tips in Master Technician Service Conference - Chrysler's Training for Mechanics
Relevant info for your brakes are in 1963, 64
Before that is different type of system.
1967 The master cylinder changed. 1969 the drum adjusters changed and so did the shoes.
