I bought a new (custom made) driveshaft: good-bye trunnion Joint.

Question: the old Trunnion joint bolted to the Trans with these crazy long nuts. The new front u-joint flange is much thicker, so using the old nuts would result in unused threads on the nut. (I can't have that!)

So I'm thinking I could just use a new normal thickness grade-8 nut (I assume these are grade-8 5/16-24). Wondering why they used a ~0.5" thick nut at the factory?

I'm trying to avoid replacing the studs... just because they might be a bear to get out while the trans is on the car.

See photos.

Thoughts?

Does that joint bind when you flop it side to side? I see the ends of the clips are raised...not right.

Does the factory interfere?

If the factory nut is difficult to get on once it is on does it interfere, full droop, full compression of the suspension?

As for other nuts does the factory have a locking feature? Lock washer?

Personally I don't see any reason not to use an alternate nut. Most of the forces are shear on the studs. Maybe a nylock?

No, I think it'll settle into the recess as I tighten it up. It think it fits nice and snug. The Factor bolts fit too, and do not interfere, but they are all so not all the way on because the studs are not long enough.

The factory nut does fit and does not interfere, it just has unused threads!
The factory has a lock-washer. I'd probably do the same.
Thanks,Joe
