hey guys

come Monday, i will be building a little frame that goes under a lazy boy

my mother in law lives with us, and I've noticed she's got a hard time getting up out of her chair

so the idea is to build a frame that sits under the chair, with a horizontal har going up with a handle on it

I'll try to ad a picture later, but this is what I have in mind, 3 pieces of 3/4 by 3/4 angle iron on the floor, in a U shape
the two legs, so to speak would run under the front and back of the chair, the bottom of the U on the right hand side

in the front right, where the two pieces of angle come together a 1 x 1 square tube will extend up, with a brace at a 45 degrees angle going towards the back of the frame (still running on the right hand side)

now, here is my question
will the brace going to the back be enough to support the vertical tube?
I'd say most of the forces pull that way, but I don't know if I should try to add a gusset across the front

(I kinda want this to be stealthy, but sturdy)

Triangles are strong.
You can't have too many.
If she is using it to pull herself up I would think 2 directions at a minimum.
Or, yes add the gusset.

thanks pirate, ill see if i can incorporate a few more gussets
(kinda tricky to do with as close as i want to bring it in to the lazy boy

this is my idea do far, red is angle iron, green is tube

Think where the "load" is going.
I would bet it's really about the middle of the gap between the 2 pillows.

I realize the covid thing has changed "us" but in this area, you see a surprising number of "previously owned" power lift chairs --whatever they are called--for sale on CL etc.

My mother had one of those lifting recliner chairs, it worked really well. Handicap stores and and businesses often have them used.

Build a platform under the couch, then loop a bar up and over the armrest so she'd have a vertical bar like in a bathroom.

thats what i need, when im her age, a lazy boy with a roll bar

this is what I came up with
I will bolt on the handle once it is painted
as you can tell, I did add one extra gusset on the outside (not a tripping Hazzard, there will be a table there)

I'm pretty happy with the way my little Flux core is working out
