Looking for a set of front bumper brackets from a non-shock 74 Dart, Sport, Duster. My 73 Sport bumper is toast and I have a new, show chrome plated front bumper from a 74. Would prefer not to rework my mounts if possible. Just need the brackets, not the long bar that runs the length of the bumper.

You will probably need to find a set of brackets that are close to the mounting holes on the bumper & modify the back end of them where they attach to the front sub frame. I might take some mixing & matching, not to mention some heat bending & welding.

Yeah, I can fab something up if necessary. But 72blunblu says not all 74's had shock mounts, that after December of 73 they went back to non-shock.

Can't say for sure that at some point thru the years they weren't changed out, but my 74 Dart doesn't have the front shocks, does have the rear ones tho. I have owned the car since 2000, so I know they weren't changed while I have had it.

Ad asks for Sport or Duster, but Duster is different.

I have some '73-'74 regular Sport bumper brackets, just have to get them out for condition & more info.

I believe maybe 1/2 of the bumper carriage bolt holes will line up using standard brackets on a shock absorber bumper.

If I understand correctly, your old bumper takes standard brackets and your new one takes the shock absorbers, which bolts to the VERY heavy formed reinforcement?

No, the car is a 73 Sport with the standard bumpers. I have those brackets. The original bumper was in really bad shape so I got a 74 bumper and had it re-chromed. The guy who sold it said it was a 73, but it's a 74. He later said it was non-shock 74 but to be honest I don't know the difference in bumpers between the shock and non-shock bumpers themselves. I know the mounts are different.

Don't know if it helps, but here's a shot of the bumper I plan to use. I know the 73 brackets I have do not line up.

The standard bumpers have an angle bracket piece that mounts between the bumper and brackets. It's basically a bolt-through which can include bumper guards. It can be left out for weight savings.

The shock absorber bumpers have a huge, heavy structure that is in between the bumpers and shock brackets. Bumper on the front & shock brackets on the back. This necessitated the use of "fillers" between the bumper & grille.

The only thing I can think of is to see if any of the '74 shock absorber bumper holes line up with the '73 brackets. Whichever ones don't, you might be able to weld extension tabs to the brackets to reach the bumper holes that don't line up and drill for carriage bolts.

I had a similar issue years ago and believe a pair of holes on each side (outers or inners) will line up.

Thanks locomotion. I'd resigned myself to having to fab something but was hoping I could find the non-shock 74 brackets. I remember 72blunblu said they would bolt right up to the 73 mounting holes in the frame.

I just compared 2 Sport bumpers and the outer pair of holes are way off. Inner pair are close, but may not line up. The single holes on either side of the license plate area won't have a place to run bolts through. That's the easiest way to tell the difference between std. & shock versions on '73 - '76 Dart Sports and Dusters. Tab extensions is the only mod that comes to mind at the moment unless you find someone to swap with.

There is only 2 versions of brackets that I've ever seen. They coincide with the frame mounting configuration. (Non-shock '73 & '74 are the same.)
