A500 in an Early A

This is the trans mount I used...

I kept chopping on the floor as I raised the trans into position, and when I was done underneath I used the radiused flatbar to build the trans hump around. Yes, in several pieces, but it's about as small as possible.

Nice work! I’m going to need to do something very similar. Did you sent your motor to be level (with respect to the floor/rocker)? Just wondering if your transmission output shaft is around 5deg down. I’m still figuring this all out.

I'm still a long way from done, so I haven't had the driveshaft shortened yet, but it's next on the list. The 727 bolted to the factory trans support, so I figured that put the motor pretty close to the correct angle. I used the thicker-style motor mounts, but if the original ones are the thin style, that may have affected things a bit. I put the end of the tailshaft in the middle of the tunnel and let 'er eat.

The new transmission hump is now welded in. It was all hand fabricated. I did miscalculate and didn't make the front long enough. As SNKEBIT has said it’s just sheet metal - add or subtract as necessary which is what i did.

@65 Dartman , how much clearance do you have between the top of the trans and tunnel? I was thinking 3/4” should be pretty good.

What engine are you using? The 273, or 340/360?
If using the 273, you do realize there is a problem with the converter register in the crank. The small blocks are just like the slant six. 67 down has the small (1.550) pilot register. 68 up has the large (1.810) register. The A-500 converter will not fit the early crank.

Yes, I’m aware of the smaller register in the crank in 67-earlier V8s and slants as I’m going to run a 66 273/235 in my 65.

How are you going to use an A-500 trans, with the small crank register? Are you going to have the register made larger, to the 1.81 size?

Yes. As a matter of fact I have 2 more V8 steel cranks and one 65 slant crank and will get them all done at the same time

That will work.
I'm not positive, but you might need to have a "ring" made to go over the flange for the flexplate, so can use the A-500 flexplate. I don't know if you can use the early flexplate with the 500 converter. The center hole in the 500 drive plate is larger then the flange on the crank.
