6.1 Hemi into 72 Demon March 2018

-
All right levity aside here is the play by play. So I tried to entice worlds best neighbor into coming over to assist with engine install but his wife shot him down. Not really sure why? Perhaps it has something to do with every time he comes over the music gets louder and drinks get stronger, then he goes home and pukes. No wonder she loves me! So doing it solo sucked, I had to ensure wiring was not pinched everything was clearing over and over. Translated run hoist, lay under car, run hoist, lay under car, run hoist, climb ladder peer down into engine bay, run hoist, you get the idea. 4 hours later, two tranny jacks, one porta power and an extra floor jack. Plus some sawz all and torch work, she is in. The alternator just would not clear. And I had predrilled a 2.5 inch hole in the fire wall for the Holley EFI wiring harness, make no mistake you need every bit of 2.5 inches. Standing in front of car the hole is drilled at 11 o clock just above the heads. Location was perfect. Do not deviate or you are screwed. I say this for my buddy in Carolina who is literally doing same thing with a 6.1 I thought I could wait him out and learn from his mistakes but no such luck. I plunged, making me the guineass Piguss. Latin for fool! He now benefits from my suffering. Enjoy the pictures, they are two years in the making.

I need any advantage I can get!!!!!

well done my friend.

So tonight I went after the drive line. And yes you too will need a adaptor part to connect your modern Hemi to your antiquated 8 3/4 rear end U joints.

So today I started on the fuel delivery system. I decided to install a quick coupler for the fuel cell. Who knows when you may want to drop the tank. A couple things I do is once I have connectors in place I go head and test for continuity right then and there so I can not worry about the connection during start up trouble shooting episodes. I took a pix of my handy dandy meter. There are all kinds, but this Fluke is my go to both at work and at home. Basically because it fits in my pocket while I am climbing!

So I was really struggling trying to sort out how to get a tach signal from the EFI system to the Dakota dash. After reading dozens of forum how to posts, each more complex than the last, I finally admitted defeat and called Dakota tech line. What a great bunch of folks if you are curious. I use one of their dashes in my race car (630+HP Cuda) and I assure it has not been treated kindly over the years. Their product is quality top to bottom. I will include a pix of my Cuda dash. Apologies it is a bit barbaric! So after my ten minute dilemma explanation to the ever patient technician at Dakota he simply replies yep that is a serious pain in the butt, we know. He then replies as a result we have created a patch BIM cord and box that solves that! Hah! Pix attached, I tried to do it so you can read part number.

So here is fuel cell quasi done. Notice the slit fuel line that I put running down length of tank seam. Sharp edges and fuel line just don’t jive. And no I will not zip tie electrical wiring to fuel line in actual install. I have done it here just to keep it sorted out while it awaits install!

So here is fuel regulator installed. I cannot stress enough the importance of doing your build , fabricating all your brackets then tearing the whole thing apart to send to paint. Yes it adds hours and hours to the build but it looks so much better when done. Regulator looks like it was born there. Runs at about 55.5 psi if you were curious!

So I finally got my graphics back from print shop. I took them a factory Demon decal and then experimented with different color schemes. Bright red just didn’t look good on side of car. I used the factory one in the back as it was on black stripe. And I went with the 370 call out. What do you guys and one gal think? I am not satisfied with the grey but am going to leave it for now. I just can’t think of a better color?

Looking real good SLO . I agree with the gray , all the work you have put in sure is paying off . You are blessed with talent my friend !

Looking good. I can see what you are saying about the grey. It really doesn’t pop at all. If ddaddy were felling better I would bet he could whip you up some photoshop of various colors on there to experiment with.

I like the color contrast. the letters in my opinion would have been more stock looking if the "Impact Font" was used like back in the day. But I do Like it for sure!!! you are doing a fantastic job

He (Dd) is really struggling with the vision thing. I have several pieces of his art in my shop. He is super talented. Hope he heals up for sure.

So today I decided to finish up exhaust system. I had it mostly tacked up but not welded out. To help remember how it went together I peened the flanges with a center punch. Of course once I got them apart it dawned on me I had only done the flange on the glass pack. Translated the witness marking had zero value as it spins on the glass pack. What an idiot! Anyway once welded up I then ground out a relief clearance for the nut to ensure it gets solid purchase. When I do that I always grab a fresh rock (millwright lingo for grinding wheel) so that I can capitalize on the square edge of the fresh wheel.

Once I had the flanges and pipe all welded out I ground off the extra edging that protruded thru the flanges. And like so many things in life cheap gaskets aren’t good and good gaskets aren’t cheap. Took a pix showing both the disparity in thickness and quality of the heat resistance on two different styles of gaskets. And wa la finished version. And yes I am running cherry bombs on a gen three Hemi. Much to the chagrin of many on here! Hah! Nothing says old school like glass packs. Who knows I might even run air shocks!
