I used to take the spring off the teflon when used on exhaust. With viton i run them as they are. I do a lot of cylinder head work in Ct. I retrofit them into any application i can, antique, racing and street stuff. I usually leave about .200 clearace between bottom of retainer and top of guide. That leaves about .050 clearance for the seal.
