Taking out the trash, what do I see?
One of these noisy little bastards,
Staring right back at me.

Diceroprocta apache (Davis, 1921) aka Citrus Cicada

This was during the 17 year cicada emergence of 2004 in Cincinnati. They came out by the 10s of millions over the course of a few weeks. You never heard such noise! They were louder than my riding lawnmower when I was curing the lawn.

They are due back again next Spring...

I grew up in SW OH and remember them well.

I've seen maybe half a dozen since I've been in FL.

We used to collect the shells in coffee cans and have contests to see who had more.

IIRC there's a 4 year cycle as well as the 17, correct?

There are 4, 7, 11, 13 and 17 year periodic cicada cycles. It depends largely on the area in which you live as to which ones you get. The 13 and 17 year ones tend to be the largest by numbers emerging.

Annual cicadas are different and emerge in smaller numbers each year like other insects.

THEY COME OUT IN MID TO LATE SUMMER HERE , USUALLY THE HOTEST WEATHER .

Burn that tree and everything near it to the ground! That's one cursed image you have there!

An older co-worker friend that moved here from the Philippines had no problem eating them right off the trees.
Not him but this a bit comical...…..

I for one love the sound of cicadas. I’ve never witnessed a massive emergence though so that could possibly change my views a bit.

Those SOB's are due back next year and I'm not looking forward to it.
If you've never experienced this, it's unreal. It's a constant drone that goes from sunup to sundown. They're everywhere and you can't walk in the yard without crunching a few with every step.
Ddaddy's pic don't do this justice. If we're not still dying of the Kung-Flu next spring, I'm going try to not be around here.

a nuclear assault would not even work as they live underground, dormant feeding off tree roots for 16 years.
