I try not to drown the amp tone with effects, they are all basically just icing on the proverbial cake. The MXR EQ is always in my chain as a signal boost and I rotate the overdrive pedals before it. The modulation pedals go after the EQ. I don't use them much but sometimes they can enhance the drive if used in a subtle way.

My usual deviation from a heavy/distorted/crunch tone is the original Univibe sound which is what the red Drybell and large Captain Coconut box thing do. Frankly, it doesn't always translate well with Gibson style guitars but it's close enough. The Drybell is awesome, gets really close to the original Shin Ei sound that Hendrix/Trower used. The CC did not turn out to be as good as I thought it would be and I hardly ever use it. Again, might just need to have a Fender guitar pushing through it to bring out the magic, the fuzz overwhelms the signal to the point of being unusable.

I'd like to own an original UniVibe but spending $2K on a vintage pedal is above my pay grade.

Funny thing is... I have all these boxes but for decades I just went straight into that Crate Stealth. Then, for less watts, the Bravo.

Lately, I've been overdrive - distortion - amp. The airy effects collect dust. I pull them out now and then.

That Metal Zone is one of the 'turds' I mentioned. I picked it up in a sweetheart deal just to see if the buzz was true.
