Hello, I am looking for a bit of advice. I will be painting my 72 Dart soon in my garage and I am trying to decide on paint. I am going with a metallic champagne type of color. I am kind of burned out on really shiny paint, so I am looking at satin/matte options. I was originally looking at matte clear coat (2-stage) options, but I see some single-stage satin options as well. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with any of these? I am not looking for a show finish, just something respectable. Not only do I like satin finish look better, I was wondering if these would be more forgiving to paint and hide potential imperfections. BTW, I have sprayed a few cars in the past, so I am not a complete beginner. Anybody care to chime in?

I would do a normal 2 stage paint job with a flattner in the clear...same brand products of course

I would definitely do 2 stage. Just remember u wont be able to sand and buff any dirt out of it or she will get shiney

Thanks for the suggestions. Are the votes for 2-stage due to the difficulty of laying out metallic with a single stage? I am just wondering if a single stage satin would be a little more forgiving in that regard. Vinyl wrap would be out because this is a complete color change and I will be painting both sides of the hood, deck lid, inner jams, etc.

Yes according to my research a single stage metallic is one of hardest paints to lay even. My very first paint job I painted my engine compartment with a 2 stage dark Green metallic, turned out pretty good being in a field.

Metallic will be difficult with single stage but single stage will be easy to flatten. Metallic will be easier with 2 stage but harder to flatten. JMHO

Just say no to metallic if you can. You will nearly never be able to match it when doing panel repairs unless you are lucky or very good. Use a quality sealer before laying down your color coat.
