After searching for a back glass for my 66 Dart I finally got one in very good condition from one of our members here. At the end of February finally had some time to install the glass. It went in without a problem. Used plenty of dawn soapy water on the glass and seal and tapped the glass gently many, many times as suggested. I did look great and I was very happy. Well, next day the glass was still in the car but completely shattered. Really don't know what happened because installation was done correctly and suggested here in the forum by many experts. Now the search continues for another back glass. The final piece for my Dart.

This is why im leaving my rear window seal alone. Pretty sure it doesnt leak but im pretty sure id have a hard time finding a one year only window.

Yes that is the problem finding them. Had been searching for a long time. But the killer is the shipping price..

There's a guy on marketplace from Dahlonega, Ga. with a 65 Dart 270 that he's parting out.

Feel for you my friend. I have broke a front windshield putting it in. Bites to say the least.

Just a little info, front windshields are 2 layer laminated glass with a sheet of plastic in the middle for safety to hold it together if it breaks. These will shoot a crack across the window if you chip the edge of the glass when installing it, but they stay together.

Back windows and side glass are tempered glass, that will go into a thousand pieces from a B-B gun or some other hard object hitting the main glass.

Was looking over the rear glass photo to try and see some sort of point of impact. If you can see an impact point, it may help you to determine what went wrong.

Whether it was an external force, a slight chip in the edge of the glass that gave it a starting point with the pressure of a tight fit making it let go. Don't know if chrome trim may have nicked into it either ???

Would be nice to have some kind of idea what happened, so you can get the next one slipped right in.

Here's a little story, hopefully has nothing to do with the OP problem...

Years ago when parts cars were plentiful and cheap, I got a 74 Duster. It had been hit in the rear sometime in the late 70's. It was fixed, they put a tailight panel in it, painted it, etc. Kid bought it, took it apart, started to sand it down, left it outside, blah, blah, you know how it goes..

I'm taking it apart with a buddy. I unlock the rear window gasket. Didn't touch anything else. Turn our backs for a second, and there is a strange hissing sound. Suddenly, BOOM! The rear window does what yours did. Come to find out, one side frame rail was bent, right at the peak of the curve over the rear axle. Like a quart milk carton if ya gave it a small crease on one side. The sides were slightly bulged out. It was either never caught or never fixed right. Unlocking the seam in the rear gasket must have allowed the rear window frame to shift enough to put some force on the glass.

Measure your window opening for square.

I did all the measurements before installing the glass and it is all square. The seal installed on the glass for over a week before installation. Don't really know what happened...

Any hit or chip on the edge of tempered glass can upset the internal stress holding it all together.

At least it held together so you can get a blanket underneath to aid cleanup.

Was that a brand new rear window rubber, or the original window rubber ??

Those original window rubbers can be pretty hard after 50 years of time, putting undue stress on a new glass that maybe fits into the old rubber just a little different than the first glass did.

Hate to say it but was new seal made in China . . ? Sorry, but their specs are way out of wack. They could not even make front wheel bearings right, had to dispose of them and go to Timkens, solved the problem.

look for a butterfly part of the window. that will tell you where th e stress point was , fix that before you install another window. I worked at the chrysler glass pant for 30 years and had to break a whole lot of tempered and laminated glass for safety checks.

I'd look here in this area. for a kinked or jagged piece of metal or something in the gasket itself.

I would have to agree ^^^^^ with the starting point at the Red Arrow Area. I blew up the picture to full screen on my computer to see finer detail, it looks like a blast pattern starting at the Red Arrow on the passenger side and moving across the window to the driver's side. Starts at Red Arrow and Funnels out to the driver's side from there.

No.. It was american made..

I dropped a 9/16 open end wrench
From about 4" high on my 67 notch
Backglass.
It looked like a room of dominoes falling over simultaneously with crackling.
Ending in same as op.

Not funny at time but really weird and amazing

AWWW, man, that sucks! I feel for you. But how did you tap it? Did you use your fingers, or did you use an object?
