6.1 Hemi into 72 Demon March 2018

So this afternoon I tackled the frame stiffness. Very early on in this build I read where you needed them. I had no idea what they were but knew I needed them per the conversations. I purchased a kit from US Tool. Knowing what I know now I would not buy them again. I had to literally slash them apart and fabricate several of the parts as they did not fit well. Perhaps some have had great success with the the kit. I did not. They did not line up with each other as the angle was wrong. Maybe my car is wonky who knows. Long story short I had to cut them apart refigure the angle and reweld. All in all for what I spent on them I could have made my own. Just another lesson of many. One thing for sure if you are working pipe some pipe wrap around is essential. I took a pix of it for those that are not familiar with it.

I’m getting at to installing some US car tool subframe connectors on my 65. To say the least I’m not impressed with the fit at all, they look decent on one side then a half inch off the other. Like they slipped in the press brake or however they make them. For over 200$ I’m pretty meh about them so far.

Never seen them I guess. I used 2x3 3/16 tubing. Just cut it to slide over the frame member, some big plug weld and extended a tang to the spring relocate bracket. Some other welding too. Welded a piece of plate on the other end of the tubing and plug welded it to the torsion bar cross member. Had to beat the floor up a little where your feet land in he back. Pretty easy. Kind of heavy though. Bad pic as I'm laying on the floor with a flat tire and shooting by braille. Lol
 
Weld is a little cold. Only had 110 back then. Ill grind that down and do a nice cover pass now that I have 220.
Thanks BP, I totally agree. They would not have been difficult to fabricate. I simply did not know. Hindsight for sure. I have wasted so much time and energy on mistakes I think I could do another car with a Hemi in half the time for a third of the cost of this one. I still have no regrets but man I have paid some heavy tuition.

The cool thing about it is that you are doing it. Always seems to be something in the way no matter what we do. Just got to do it to find out what those things are.
 
This weekend was more wiring and plumbing. First picture is my redneck solution to needing dual temp sensors. Basically I have two complete separate circuits in the car one for the Holley EFI system and another for ancillary junk like lights fans wipers etc. so I need one sensor for the Holley engine management system and another to read temp for Dakota dash. I could only find one port usable for water temp so I scrounged around in my brass box and found some couplers and what have you, that I could braze up into one dual sensor fitting. The picture is before it is cleaned up and installed. I may have an issue with calibration so my fall back plan is to drill and weld a bung in bottom of radiator. I should have took a pix of it installed but I got to sipping whiskey instead. The other pix are the CAI tube. Yet another debacle from changing to the bigger diameter throttle body. I took the pix of the step bit for those that do not habitually use one. They are designed to pull them selves in and man they will. I always put a piece of tape on as a “stop” reference point so I don’t over drill. They are super handy and I use them all the time. When welding aluminum, especially thin aluminum, cleaner is better. I took my salvaged fittings and ground off all the plating and primer. I cannot stress enough when welding aluminum preparation is key. That’s all for now I need to fire up the BBQ and turn up some David Allan Coe. Cheers to my buddy out there doing fixed wing junk this month. You know who ya are! Full disclosure he is a rotor head!

Cleanliness on aluminum carries over to painting too. Bury a chunk of iron under primer on an aluminum panel an you will have galvanic corrosion. Certified body shops have dedicated aluminum stations. Hell, the factory has trouble pulling it off . Coated one time use bolts and fiber washers. They still have problems. Awesome work on the Demon. I wish I had your drive. I'm getting burned out on cars.

Thanks BP, I am struggling with that very topic. I have been pushing hard enough that on occasion I resent the Demon! Fundamentally I lost months to the painting aspect. So I am super behind if I want to drive it this a Summer. At one point today I just couldn’t imagine crawling back in the car so I tossed on some leather and went for a putt! A motorcycle ride is always good for the soul. My face is about burnt off tho. Looks like Fred is making progress on both his car and his boys plane. I might buzz up there when his boy taxis it out of the shop and down the street for takeoff. Fred will be grinning like a monkey. He will be distracted and I can drink all his hootch!

Speaking of drive, Fred sure is gettin' 'er done. I'm sure he would enjoy a visit from you. I like that burnt off face feeling. I've been eyeballing bikes lately. To many people out to kill ya around here. Local guy hit a deer and got killed a couple days ago. Injured the 5 year old boy pretty good too. So sad.

I had to mitre in both a reduction in size and an angle of about thirty degrees. Pipe fitter hint: since I was not sure how it would all fit I sorted out the angle first and got that welded up and left the ends wild figuring I would trim to fit. Once I get it welded up with root passes I will run cover pass and make it pretty for hydro dipping.

I knew I was doing something wrong! Thanks for the tip! Hah! I am going to try and get it welded up today. I am conflicted over fabricating a box to separate it from engine temp. Since this car is being built as a daily driver vs race car not sure the benefit is there? I might just continue to focus on getting it running then modify later. That being said all I have to do is look at my Cuda and there is a list of things to finish as I got it running thinking to myself I would do pretties later. Once they run I drive em! My brain doesn’t work like that. Once I get them running and safe in my head I am on to the next project. Fatal flaw for sure.

It always cracks me up when I see people put aftermarket "cold air" systems on their vehicles and effectively introduce warmer air than the factory setup. I did not realize the Demon is going to be a daily driver. Sure looks like a race car. A damned nice one at that. I put a K&N on my work truck. I could feel the power increase. Rings were shot at 80,000
 
While it is in theory going to be a daily driver my default setting is always “race car” My wife wants to drive this one to work. She explained to me in no uncertain terms, complete with adjectives, there will be no 5 point harness and we do not need another car with a roll bar! Here Is a pix of the finished version on CAI. I think I will still box it out, I positioned it by a very nice opening in grill support sheet metal. I am going to fabricate some duct work to force the outside air to the strategically positioned CAI. I decided while I was welding bungs in rather than make a Y for crank case ventilation I would just add a bung and have separate lines. I liked it, seems cleaner. Turned out pretty good for A bunch of crazy angles and diameter reductions. Note to self when welding thin a** aluminum don’t use wore out glove. I burnt the shi** out of my palm.

Fun going through your 19 pages. Glad it's you not me doing the electrical. Makes my project seem very simple.

Hah! Thanks. I wish it was anybody but me doing the electrical too. It is just not my strong suit. I am not comfortable doing it and I make a lot of mistakes. My lack of skill forces me to do a lot of research prior to executing. Hopefully I will get the fuel lines sorted out tomorrow. Then I will lower the car and attack the Dakota Digital box’s.

It's going to be a very unique car. Had to be painful waiting on paint.
Love the Demons. I have a Demon project mothballed.
Building a 408 has me searching for answers too. But what you are doing is a new frontier.
 
So here is a before and after on the tail lights. Demon lights are very difficult to find vs the Dusters. I used Mother’s to shine up the black plastic and molding. PS Idaho, there is a whole bunch of guys on here with 408 knowledge. Float your questions out and you will get a plethora of answers. Johnny MAC is a vendor on here and is straight up quality and integrity. They build 408s.

So I finally got all the fuel line ran. For the record I love the way AN fittings work and look but they are a total PITA. I did find a perfect use for the torsion bar socket tho. I ran fuel lines right thru the hole! And yes those are cherry bombs (glass packs)! 500 HP modern Hemi with headers and cherry bombs. If I have to explain you will never understand.
