i think im finally getting ready to replace my fuel sending unit
i think i have about 3/4s of a tank (though the gauge reads 1/2)

is that low enough to pull the sending unit without getting showered?

You're going to want less than half a tank to be safe, especially if you only plan on raising the rear end of the car to get under there as that will tip it toward the sender.

Thanks
I'm gonna add a new fuel line, and convert the existing one into a return

So I was planning on lifting up the entire passenger side of the car

I just changed mine and 3/4 would be way to much ,drain has much as possible ,then when you lift the car ,have the front end a bit higher then the rear.if you didn't buy an nos sending unit be sure to use the original lock nut .the Chinese junk dosent lock to well.hope this helps

I'd still say you'll need less than half a tank. The sender is in the middle so raising one side won't be any better than keeping it level. Also, if your tank is from a model year that has vents on the driver's side raising the passenger side of the car with any significant amount of fuel still in the tank will put fuel into all those vent lines. Which I suppose is one way to check the integrity of those lines and clamps.

it's a 71..
honestly not sure where the vents are

too cold to work on it now anyway

I'll shoot for Friday...that gives me 5 days to burn a half a tank of gas
