What determines the color a convertible top frame is painted? Top color? Or interior?

I’m examining two, a black 63 Valiant with black frame And a black 64 Dart with white frame. Both have remnants of black tops. Could the white frame mean the 64 originally had a white top that got replaced?

Seems logical, but I have never seen a white frame. On any year. Haven't seen any white tops except in photos so that might be it.

My 67 Dart was ordered with a white top and Blue body and interior top frame is Black. have never seen a white frame

I'm restoring the top mecanism and changing top on a 65 Dart.

For what's worth, my '66 Valiant came originally with a white top and a black frame.

As far as I know my '67 Barracuda left the factory with a white top and a black frame.

Almost sounds like Dart frames were white and Valiant / Barracuda frames were black. Any contrary examples?

The same frame was used on both cars. I doubt that any were painted white from the factory due to the fact that the underside was black, even on a white top. My GTS is a black top/black frame.

My 65 Dart Charger has a black top with black mecanism. The one I'm restoring for a friend of mine had white top and white mecanism. It hadn't been repainted since new.

We make lincoln convertible tops and white tops have a black liner I haven't seen a white outer and white inner canvas top in about 20 years or so(not saying that you can't get it,but it's not standard)
. 99% of the cars I've seen (yeah fords,gm and mopars) all have the black top frame , once you get into BMW, Mercedes and porches and other high end luxury cars, then bets are off. I just did a complete interior for a 56 porche and had to spray the frame tan but it had a headliner in it. this is it right before we put the top and headliner in it,BTW MAJOR pain in the Behind to do.

I guess this is the best proof of what color the top mecanism had from start. These are the rubber boots that goes on the sides of the rear bow. The rear bow is mounted with two screws and on top these rubber boots cover the screws. This car had white rubber boots so I'm pretty sure is came with a white top mecanism.

fantastic detail thank you!

I'll go look for these when I'm at the shop today. Pretty sure the Valiant was black and the Dart was white, it seems original. I wonder why those colors were used? Different plants maybe? Midyear change? Completely random?

With mopar you can bet there was a reason but it was never documented, a matter of supplies on hand at the time or something.

I always thought it had to do with the color of the top material and interior color combo.

Rebuilding the frame in my 1964 Valiant convertible. The original paint appears white, or off-white (cream). Some parts are recessed inside another and were white inside, which was also the base color on the front bow. Somebody sprayed black over the white on the undersides. The body was originally red, but I don't know the top color since missing when I bought the car. The side pads were there and black, but perhaps all are.

When rebuilding, I suggest not removing the fwd hinge pin. I did, using a shop press and broke the center ear when forcing the pin thru. It had mushroomed a bit on the end. I had filed the mushroom, but apparently not enough. I will leave the other side as-is. I had to secure the 2 broken aluminum pieces to the frame with roll-pins, then a steel strap over them (Home Depot plumbing strap), secured to the frame by a 10-24 bolt in a tapped hole on each end. I found an outer ear crack, so secured with a roll-pin. Most places with steel in aluminum was corroded together. I removed 70% of the Phillips screws which secure the stainless weatherstrip rail using an impact hammer. The others had the screw head break off. Since too hard to drill the screws, I tapped new holes to the side. I tapped all holes for 10-24 stainless Torx screws. Strange that the factory used sheet-metal screws. I'll use anti-sieze on the threads. A few roll-pins didn't budge, though I didn't own a good punch set. I had to drill them out using a cobalt drill bit since regular HSS chrome nitrate bits couldn't cut the hard roll-pin steel.

BTW, to fix the broken hinge ear, I first tried aluminum brazing, per youtube's. I heated the part to 500 F on my outdoor grill, then a propane torch at the spot while still on the grill. I cleaned the groove I cut as best I could with a stainless brush once heated and the aluminum braze rod melted by touching the aluminum as I rubbed it in. It looked bright and well- bonded, but later popped off the casting so wasn't truly bonded. I'll fill those gaps w/ epoxy before painting. I stripped all paint off the aluminum parts and will use NAPA ZinChrom spray primer.

My 65 Canadian Valiant had an off white frame color and a black top. I painted it black and installed a white top. A lot of items in my Valiant were like a U.S. Dart.

The white frame may have been part of a special dealer package... Or a seasonal/regional color. Lots of those were done in the day.

In Milwaukee we had "White Hat Specials"... Since corporate ads touted Dodge as " The Good Guys with White Hats" it was a take off on that.

Most of those cars were white (not a common color) or had a white vinyl top...maybe a white interior.

Not sure about ragtops.

I picked up a red 64 Valiant, had white top and Manual white frame (that was painted red) My other 2 64's both have black frames that are power
So maybe something with manual and power tops?

1964 Valiant 200. White frame and white manual top. The top is factory original with date stamp inside showing mfg date and vendor name. No doubt this car was white frame and top as it was in storage since 1982 before I got it 4 yrs ago.

Can you send me pictures of manufacturer and the date code?
