1972 Dodge Colt

Gave away all my magazines, about 10 boxes, when we moved 2 years ago

I don't completely agree. They had to get the weight down. The smaller Hemis did run some great times, held the record for a short time, but it was the end of that era. The wedges could get more compression with a smaller dome piston (lighter weight), which gave them the rpm edge. The Corporation was hurting, factory support was gone, and the nhra really wanted the chevies to win anyway. Bob Glidden kept winning with his fords, which had to piss the nhra off to no end. Bob did win in 79 with the Arrow, small block. But the class was changing and Mopar just wasn't the main player anymore. Randy Humprey ran 8.46-159.01 at Fremont WWCS in 4/79 to set a new national ET record.

Anyway I want a Hemi just to have the history to go with this car. If I find a small one, it's icing on the cake!

Found a source for the aluminum motor plate. Started with cardboard making a template.
Here is first attempt.

I think that you will find that the cardboard (even though lighter than aluminum) is too weak to hold the engine in place.

Just kidding!
I love the progress and the pics!

maybe you could "borrow" one of NASA's 3D metal printers and produce it from some exotic, lite weight, space age material.

I could do that, we will see how much cash I have. Still waiting to find some Hemi heads and a 396 or 366 de-stroked short block!

There are a couple of low deck, big blocks converted to Hemi heads out there. John Hagen & his engine builder use to run them just before Pro Stock went to the 500 cu. in. format. Don't know if they are for sale and don't recall the name of one of the owners at the moment. I'd have to do some digging.

I found one that Charlie Malyuke used at one time. It is FULL of concrete. I hate to even ask what they want for it. It's a 383 with aluminum caps.

Template number 3, I think this is going to work. Now to start cutting aluminum.
I will take a little weight out after it's all mounted and all the accessories are mounted.

If your "skeered", say your "skeered".

Mid plate, front plate, block strut rods, right and left, what else do you guys want me to do!

I am not "skeered".

Stan, keep moving forward. I ain't skeered, I'd drive it if given the chance. LOL

Forgot you were running a midplate also. It's just that unlike a V8 the water pump kind of hangs out in mid air, and you're running a stick.

Current progress.
Block plate in the right place now.
Bell ground, just a little.
30 degree tilt, done.
And the motor only fell out 1 1/2 times during this work.
That tilt on the engine is really a challenge.
I can get the distributor in, but can't get the oil pump in or out.
I have to cut a tube to make that work, really want to be able to service the pump.
But the block plate, bellhousing and transmission is in for fit.
In this picture you can see the Airheart master cylinder. Old school!
I have ordered the mount tabs from Alston, but they aren't shipping any parts.

I kicked the motor over a couple of inches in the front and bingo, oil pump goes in with no problem. Has good clearance to the frame rail. So I put all the stuff on the engine and put the hood on. The breather clears the hood on an Offenhauser cast valve cover. So here it is all buttoned up. Only the headers are the hard part to do now and then we can start to put it all together. I was thinking next year, but now the fall looks possible.

Is that an old Mallory Double Life? Now I'm jealous.

Thanks! Rusty, you can be envious, but don't be jealous. Jealous means you want mine, I just want you to have your own!
