Question about quench

-
I'd be interested in seeing where your total timing likes to be when you test..

It will be 36-38+ on race gasoline---might be different on alcohol. Domes are inefficient usually-but in the quest for compression can be useful. J.Rob

I recently put a 340 together, and the piston came out of the hole .038 with a 62cc head.
So the .038 felpros were a no go.
Ordered .062 Cometics, so it would end up with .024 quench and the engine runs great.
I had a 440 that the piston was down in the hole a ton, so it had a bean field of quench, that engine detonated something terrible, even though the compression was low. Inefficient combustion I attributed it to.
That’s all I got on quench I’m getting a drink

.024" thats tight-I like it. I'll have one with you. J.Rob

That’s what happens when you go behind someone else. Customer had a short block, it just needed assembled.
Probably it was to be used with a open chamber head, and that guy sold it to this guy. He’s got closed chamber Indy ez heads, and I’m just the idiot that got stuck putting it together.
I’m talking to the Napa delivery guy who’s a ex excellent machinist. He was the main guy a couple super stock guys used for decades, He’s like that’s gonna be close, but one of the best engines I’ve seen run was close, I Like it!
It runs damn good, and has a nice pop to it.

Well thank God I ordered my Cometics today because with this damn shutdown things are all messed up. Don at 4secondsflat.com said his last set took 19 days. Now for the really bad news. They make them in Ohio (I live in PA) but they have to ship them across the country to Oregan then back to PA. So I guess I'll see them in 30 days or so.
sound like me
If i order from the midwest to east it take a day longer then if i order from the west. Either way it had to go to SLC Utah, too be sorted before it goes to Wy:BangHead:
That's why i usually order from Summit instead of Jegs. Summit is in Nevada and i get it a day sooner! Ahhhh...... that was before i had/we had a corona That's you can't drink or touch for that matter.

Let me say this ! quench is a good thing. :D
Better to have it than not :BangHead:

Sorry, I was lucky enough to drive a 68 B body Hemi car. Never built one or tuned one. You are the expert there. Apparently the author of the article has not. I was just sharing some information that seemed to come from a reliable source. Apparently I was misinformed. I will just stop posting information of any sort. I don't want to look stupid and spread incorrect information. I could say more but I think I will just shut up while I am ahead.

Jesus get over it. Build quench all you want. It doesn’t affect ignition timing. At all. Damn sensitive people. Post what you want. But don’t expect others to not read it and give their opinions. It’s not like a magazine article has never been wrong. Not.

This 408 is honestly the first engine I’ve even given it a second thought. I did add quench to my 572 nitrous engine because I was advised to because my head chambers weren’t “softened” for nitrous. I was told this will give me a bigger tuning window.

I agree with that. If you can’t soften the chamber when you need to, then by all means close the quench down. I wasn’t talking power adder stuff though. I’d still rather soften the chambers as a first options.

BTW...did you see what Brett Miller did with that 45ish inch W8 engine???? Absolutely unreal numbers. And RPM. And you all know know I get off on RPM. And that thing gets it on.
Anyway, did you see the pictures of the heads??? Pretty soft chamber for an N/A build. Just impressive what he did. Over 2 HP/CID at over 450 inches. Impressive. On one frigging 4V.

Brett millers 1000+ small block. It sure sounds impressive

I couldn’t afford even the short block on those builds. Those guys spend crazy money. What get me is NA they aren’t quick enough to run competitively in heads up classes. I just don’t get it because most of those guys are test n tuners. 5.20’s aren’t going to get you there.

Pretty sure you are getting the heads confused. The softened chamber are for an adder build.

I call that a pretty soft chamber, especially N/A. Did you pull those off of yellowbullet?

Edit: let me see if that is the same chamber he used. I don’t care much for YB so I don’t go there often.

Pictures I posted are from his Facebook group. I go on Yellowbullet but not everyday.

Well I did run one , for 14 yrs . . It had a very close ''quench'' , so close the side /tapered part of the pistons just touched the heads at 7000 rpm , steel rods of course .
I talked to Tom Hoover about it once , he said "just right !"

Stock my two hemi`s had about .060 , which was recommended for a street hemi , back then .
Once when playing w/ the timing at the dragstrip , I jacked it up to about 40 degress , it didnt like it , went back to 36--------jfyi

Yeah, I caught that. The chambers on YB are pretty soft. LOL I don’t go to YB much either but my buddy sent me the link. He loves it over there.

That site changes to much. I liked it better 5 years ago. But there is a lot of good info on there if you stay out of the trash area. Not saying I don’t visit that area because it has some good stuff too. Lol.
