I am contemplating getting an Edelbrick AVS2 500 cfm carb model 1902 for my 67 Commando to replace the old Carter. One thing I noticed is that the choke arrangements are different (Edelbrock is Manual and the Carter is with the old intake heater spring system?) Now my question. Can I make the Edelbrock work with the stock choke actuation system? Or do I need to go with and electric choke?

If you can mimic the vacuum choke pull-off, and get the choke rod length correct, I don't see why not....

You should be able to. They’re meant to be bent accordingly. No interested in going manual?

Not really. I had a '66 Fairlane back in the day with a manual and did not like it. May just go electric but wanted to see if this was doable.

I find its way easier than tinkering with the electric. You should be able to get the factory to work though.

Jake

Like mentioned above, you should be able to make it work. Personally, I prefer an electric choke. 65'

The choke is first thing I take off my Ede carbs.
Don't need no stinking choke. But then Again, I don't live in Alaska.

is the gold lever on the avs that is pointing down to 5 oclock connected to the choke butterfly? cuz if it is it is much more to the rear - maybe too far back to connect to stock bi metal choke coil. and rigging up a vacuum pulloff = much work

My opinion is you should just go with the electric choke because you will be screwing with trying to get that set up and working for frickin days.
Remember every time you change something trying to make it work right, you will have to wait for the motor to cool down again to test it.
Once set the electrics work flawless.

Maybe that's because you guys have so much flammable garbage in the air already you don't need to choke anything. LOL
Now that a lot of things are shut down you might need the choke again.:D

Yes you are right. That's the reasoning for my question.

Five options.
1. Buy it hook it up and see if it works.
2. Go manual, with a cable.
3. Wire it open.
4. Remove it.
5. Go electric.

The AVS’s choke rod will be a pain to get to work right with the Edelbrock carb. The arms are two different lengths at a different angle. You could try and swap them. But I don’t know if that will work.

FWIW, I’d go electric choke.

I have the 1905 AVS2 manual choke and I faked the factory choke system for the “correct” look.

I tapped the holes on the AV2 2 carb body where the pull-off would mount and installed an NOS pull off in the factory location. I also ran a dummy vacuum hose from the pull off to the plug in the base where a nipple would be. I also have the factory choke well installed. I drilled a hole in the manual choke bracket and attached the choke well arm to that.

To the casual viewer it looks like a factory choke setup.

That's not called a mod. It's called a choke rod adjustment.

If you're good at fabricating/modifying, the Six Pack factory chokes have a very long rod that lends well to modifications.

This is a carb mod!
Secondary pump shot cluster. 600 AFB.
Holley air bleed(s) in the secondary side, 750 AFB.
Look for the shiny brass on the left tucked underneath.

I can appreciate your work, and the wanting to stay correct look. But now you have the Edelbrock AVS2 badge, that is not so correct looking. The badge is the second thing I remove, on my Ede carbs. Really helps it look more like a Carter. There are 2 push pins that hold the badge in. Pry them out, and trash the badge.
