ideas for insulating garage/wall ceiling covering

Thanks 1995dak! The properties of the mineral wool is what is so attractive. If I had know about when I insulated the house,I would have used it. I'd be interested to hear what you do with the ceiling. Thanks again! Bob

That spay on stuff started falling off in chunks about 6-8 yrs in a place I worked once.

famous bob,our other house had an attached garage below the bedrooms, raised ranch, and the garage was drywalled and taped. One day I start my Dart up in there, open headers. As I rev'd it up,BAM!A piece of tape and joint compound hit the windshield....I think that was also the time Mom came down and said I was rattling her teeth. They were real not dentures.

Maybe, just maybe,I'll actually get around to doing something...seeing as how I've only been here 20 years.Geez! Where does time go? The garage has trusses and I'd like to use rock wool insulation.Yes,I know i can Google it but I'd prefer ideas from people that have done this themselves. There is no storage in the ceiling so that will be closed off.The electrical will be moved outside the walls, ala European. I get the put the insulation between joists, what about above it?How do you lay it in with all the bracing? I need to picture how it's going to look before starting.(and that is probably another reason I never get things finished cause once I visualize it done,I'm done). How about covering for walls/ceiling? Drywall? Plywood? Metal? A friend did plywood but I'd want to coat it in fireproofing(?) paint. If drywall was used, I suppose taping is needed so it doesn't leak air? Metal would be cool BUT...Any ideas and PICTURES would be helpful. Of course, there is 20 plus years of accumulation that needs to be moved around to work any area at a time.Hmm,maybe I'd clean up a bit? Thanks for any ideas!Bob
Four years ago I built a 54x40 shop and spent the extra money to spray foam insulate it.
Best thing I could have done, it made it a whole different building.
Superior insulating for heat and A/C I believe it has already paid for the extra cost.
It seals up all the cracks and openings.
It sound proofs the shop
The building is now more ridged like it has been glued together
Because the shop is sealed the humidity level is lower inside
I will never build another shop or home without it being spray foam insulated.

That's a steal on those foam boards. I used foil faced foam boards on my ceiling and a foil type tape on the seams. Don't use regular duct tape, it starts to come off after awhile. The foil keeps things brighter in there too.
I used foil faced board as well but i haven’t taped the seams yet in fear of it all falling off and having to retape it. What foil tape did you use? This would be awesome because I’ve been hesitant to tape the seams.

512Stroker,the item about "being glued together" is a thought.I close the service door and it seems the side shakes.
black954,what did you us to fasten the board to the joists?
All these good ideas! I'm gonna need a second job to pay for all this.Bob

Well, because both my rotator cuffs are completely torn, I couldn’t drive nails overhead. So I bought 1” plastic capped nails and removed the caps. Then I had my kids screw 1 1/2” drywall screws into the caps and I just screwed them up to the trusses. It worked great cause I could just jam the screw into the foam board and then screw it in.

Halfafish, thanks for the info. Are those radiant heaters in the second picture?

If you're asking about the big black square things above the door, no they are not heaters. Those are speakers. I have another set on the other end of the shop and a pair of subwoofers also. Makes for a fine audio system when out there puttering on the car!

The shop is so well insulated I heat with a 30,000 BTU propane heater. In 15 minutes I can get it warm enough I can work in an insulated sweatshirt with outdoor temps in the 30's.

black954, that's a great idea!but sorry about your rotators.
halfafish,I'd be too busy changing records to get any work done. Must be a nice place to have a party in the winter!

Looks very nice. Here is a picture of the tape I used. So far the tape has held up very well and some of my seems aren't even on the joists. Very strong tape that sticks! As I said don't use regular duct tape, It's a waste of money. It starts coming off in a few months. Steve

Awesome, thank you so much. This fall I’m renting a scissor lift to finish the ceiling panels and I’ll tape the seams with that foil tape as well. Working from a 12’ A-frame ladder is sketchy at best lol.
