Need a big one? I bought an electronics hot air/solder station for 55 on ebay free shipping. Hot air reflow gun with digital 500F heat and flow control as well as a ceramic heater 50W soldering iron with digital temp guage and 30 second heat up time. Pretty cool.

Look on Amazon. Pretty high tech ones are cheap. I bought an off brand one that is pretty nice & plenty good for home use.

Buy a Weller gun type if you want to soldier wires in a car or somewhere not on a bench. It is only hot while you are pulling the trigger & you have as much cord as you want.

The bench one I bought off Amazon is pictured. It is nice for bench work. This one is not a Weller gun type. It is a bench type iron.

I have been an amateur solderer most of my life, so I am not an expert. I don’t use mine much except when I have a project going.

I would personally use a Butane powered soldering iron for doing car wiring. Once you solder you can use the iron as a heat gun to shrink your shrink tubing

I had to look up Apex never heard of it. Evidently Apex IS Weller nowadays..............

OP Look on C/L for Weller. I've bought SEVERAL over the years at thrift stores, garage sales, and yep, C/L

I have done the same with the weller guns over the years. Have had a bunch. They are great for wiring.

The only thing I dislike is the lifetime of the new tips for them. I have bought the Weller brand tips and others. None seem to last very long. Any suggestions on where to get better ones?

I have never used a butane soldering iron. Is it the kind where you pull the trigger and it lights, and then the flame goes out when you release the trigger? Does it heat up quickly?

It has a igniter to start it & it stays hot like a regular soldering iron. Easier to use when soldering in tight places on a car.Heat is adjustable also.

Butane is great so far as it goes. The box stores, Lowes, HD sell one for about 20 that works pretty fair, much cheaper than the blue Weller. I forget brand offhand. One caveat about butane. At near freezing temperatures, butane is near atmospheric pressure, which means "it simply does not work" at low temps.

Here we go, Berzomatic ST500T

I have also owned several Weller's over the past 45 yrs and they are great guns. Bought the last one off of FB for $15 in like new condition. BTW: for quite a while Weller also made Radio Shack guns. Look identical and work identical so if you see a good used one pop up cheap go for it. The standard 100/140 watt will do wires up to 10 ga no problem

Thanks everyone, I like the responses and will be purchasing a Well. Hopefully I wont get branded when I go you use it. lolol
