electrical connectors

as far as the metal ends themselves, I'd need 3 female and 1 male. It's the plastic shells that I'm most concerned with. I'm a little confused by what sex they would consider them. I guess just the opposite side of the photo's. 1 of each.
That's correct.
The metal parts are called the terminals, and yes the male terminals are usualy in the female housings.

There's a few catches when dealing with these.
The closest male terminals can be found under Packard 56 (also called Delphi and APtiv by successive owners of the product line.)
The closest female terminals are Packard 58 and some other manufacturer's terminals.
They do not all interchange perfectly. Try to find the closest female terminal to the original when using the original housings.
