If you've got a set of Harbor Freight jack stands somewhere in your garage, stop using them immediately because many of them have just been recalled over pawls that could "disengage from the extension lifting post" under a shift in weight, causing them to suddenly collapse...

According to Harbor Freight, the recall applies to three-ton and six-ton heavy-duty steel jack stands with item numbers 56371, 61196, and 61197. The number on the three-ton units can be found on the label at the top while the six-ton stands have their numbers printed in the yellow section of the label found on the base.

Based on the NHTSA filing, the recall applies to a total of 454,000 jack stands made between 2013 and 2019 and the issue is apparently blamed on old tooling used by the factory.

They'll attempt to kill us any way they can

Damn that's scary stuff! Makes me wonder how many other generic brands are similar that didnt get recalled! My set came from Walmart close to 20 years ago. It was a combo pack. Came with 2 stands and a floor jack the floor jack got tossed a couple years ago when the Sizzers bend and my 01 dodge feel. Lucky I wasnt under it. I still use the Jack stands but this has me 2nd guessing that. Maybe I should be in the market for some quality Jack stands.

@gzig5 needs to read this. It might help him decide what engine stand to buy. (or not buy)

I have 4 of the 3 ton units. Bought early 2000. I need to verify that number. Mine have deep engaging dogs as they are not that easy to unlock. And they are from HF. Interesting read for sure....

I have a couple sets from HF from around 03 or 04, never any issues but the strange thing at the time I bought those, the ones at Sears were identical other than the color and priced almost double

Mine are 6 ton. I've had them for years, with no problems. Much like the engine stands, they have some cheap ones, and some not so cheap. I wouldn't have the cheap engine stands, or jack stands from HF, or anywhere else.

The surprise here is not that they failed it's that anybody actually tried to do a "recall."

The best (safest) stands are ones that have a pin that goes through them. Those cast lugs have been known to break off. Even if you have ones that are not on the recall list, be careful when dropping the car down on them. Let it down gently. I have seen them slip and heard many stories of those lugs breaking off.
I have a pile of 6x6 and 4x4 lumber blocks, its pretty much all I use most of the time. If I do use jack stands I will still throw a couple blocks under in case the stands fail.

Btw, most of sears crap is China these days. All their hydraulic jacks and stuff like that are crap with the price doubled.

Crib Block is King! Hard to mash a stack of hardwood timbers flat....

Thanks! I think I have both the 3 and 6 ton version of the grey Pittsburgh brand. Have to check the numbers.
Everything in life is a compromise. You make your choices and take your chances.

Couldn't pay me to support my dart with that type of jack stand.

Not enough surface area where it meets the frame of the car.
