Does anyone know of an axle and gear swap I can put in my 7.25 housing with out much hassle/ I have a 65 dart slant with a904! Id like to have at least 3:25!

I'm getting a couple of 7 1/4 rears. check back with me in a week. I'll see what gears they are.

Just sold a 7-1/4 rear axle to a guy in NC heading to Fla for a freshing up.
Axle ratio for that suregrip was 3.21to1
1966 Formula S car.

A lot will depend on how you define "hassle". To me, the easiest is to swap the whole rear axle assembly with another good one of the same type and with the ratio you want. Just changing the gear set (if that's all it needs) would be the next easiest if you have the proper tools and know-how to set them up in your housing. To get a stronger rear end and keep the same wheel bolt pattern, you're looking at getting a complete drum to drum 8 3/4 from a '66-72 Abody, the shock plates, and shortening the driveshaft. Lots of money, but, a great upgrade. It would also be much easier to change the gear ratio or add a sure grip at a future date. Another option is getting an 8 1/4 Complete rear from a '73-6 ABody, shock plates, and also shortening the driveshaft, but, it has the larger 4 1/2" bolt patter for the wheels.

By hassle I mean I just want to swap out the gears with no welding or axle cutting. I just put in a brand new drive shaft and do not want it cut! I hate the single tire spin I want to be able to have both tires hook up! The 4 in bolt pattern axles on it now are terrible!

Then you're looking at getting a complete 7 1/4 with the gears you want, in a sure grip version. Good luck there. Next option would be to get a set of gears and a sure grip unit put into your housing. Probably easier to find the gears and sure grip separately than together in a good read end, but then you have the expense of setting them up in the housing.

Any idea what year cars came with that in 5 x4.5 pattern?

In the Abodies, '73-6, in both the 7 1/4, and 8 1/4. All years came with the 5 on 4 inch pattern. '72 and earlier had the 8 3/4 option. Finding a sure grip for a 7 1/4 is fairly rare though, and I've only seen them in a '60's car.

Only reason u would think they r terrible is lack of rim selection, but if one already has the 5 on 4" Rally rims like I do, an 8 3/4 with a 3.73 pumpkin, shock plates and new drive shaft, Im all already to go!!! Just got to buy a Richmond Gear 3.23 ring and pinion and then its Woo Hoo time!!!

Actually I think it is terrible because it is single track. I wish i had never bought an Abody now! this is really pissing me off, so close to finishing it and nonw no good rear end without major cutting and slicing!

The only cutting involved would be shortening the driveshaft. Everything else is bolt in.

Iys a brand new drive shaft from driveshaft specialist in San Antonio Tx. I dont want to cut it! To what are you referring as a bolt in? I missed that part!

All the parts to do the conversion are factory parts, and will bolt in without having to modify or weld anything. You don't have to cut your precious driveshaft if you don't want to, just get another of the proper length and u-joints.

Well it is precious to me it cost me 440 bucks. You might have money to burn but I don’t.

You're pretty much going to have to stick with a 7 1/4 then. Find one equipped with a sure grip and the gears you want, or, build yours with the desired parts.

Thats what I tried to tell you, they dont make a internal part kit to rebuild the 7 1/4 to make it SG! At least not any that I could find!

Halafish has a 7 1/4 Sure Grip rear end for sale on here in Suspension parts. He's asking the normal going price for a complete 7 1/4 SG.....so don't  when you see it!

Unless you know how to properly set up a gear set (pinion depth and drag, backlash, gear mesh pattern and the like) there is no "swapping out gears". in any rear end. You will need some special tools, equipment, parts, and know how.
