Stockish 340 upgrades, cam needed

Indeed... A .030 mill with the PermaTorque head gasket is going to yield a 10.1:1 compression ratio, and put dynamic compression and intake closing right on target with a 10:1 340 with ‘68 four speed cam. The low lift flows of those heads are still very good, which shows an efficient port layout and design, so the low velocity isn’t going to be as great of a concern as initially suspected. But, it will need to use 1.5:1 rockers. I had originally stated 1.6, and while the extra lift wouldn’t hurt anything (except probably valve train geometry), the extra duration added in the .050–.200 lift range (even though it doesn’t effect the seat to seat duration) would cause a drop in low rpm cylinder pressure and torque. 10.1:1 comes right in with a DCR of 8.3:1 and a cranking compression of 160 psi. While this is probably beyond what a set of J heads would tolerate, the closed chamber heads with the .038 quench will work well enough to allow good static timing and something close to a performance mechanical advance rate.

Picked up the heads, pistons and rods. Crank has been away 3 weeks for balancing. 4 speed tranny parts here. TTI exhaust should be here this week. Kim

Glad to see this one coming together, that's some really nice work out of Graham's shop, for sure. Looks like it's going to be a happy combination.

Crank, pistons and rods are in. 1.75 clearance on all rods. 2.0 on all mains. Had to take the heads back to be milled .031. That’s next weeks project as we’re at the lake this week. Kim

At the 61 cc’s your looking at a 10.15:1 - 10.2:1 compression ratio. Looking Good!

Here is the sweep with Comp Ultra Pro Magnum rockers. 1.5 ratio. This is b4 the run in. Re shimmed the valve springs from 1.900to 1.800. Going in the car today. Kim

 Yeah, I'd run that valve train and not lose any sleep at night over it... Everything else looking great, too!

New parts added. Quick Fuel 650 dp Brawler carb, Proform ignition kit, MP valve covers. Holley finned aluminum air cleaner. Comp rockers and pushrods. MSD street Fire plug wires TTI headers and complete X pipe exhaust system. Kim

Kim was kind enough to send me a video to share of the finished build running with the Howards .506 220/267 advertised camshaft. For all those curious to see how it sounds at idle, enjoy!

He has it down in Phoenix and is driving it some. Maybe 200 miles on it. Runs beautifully. Trying to get it to pass a smog test. Kim
