Attempting to do my first rear main seal. Motor is in the car. I believe I have the retainer snugged down correctly but it sits below the pan rail on the block. What am I missing? Thanks, Jeff

Mine was the same way , after numerous times doing it over and over , I bought an aftermarket billet cap , "one of the best thing I `ve done !"
Mine wasnt centered in the block when shoved up on the crank/w/o bolts in it , when I tightened it it pulled it to one side = leak .

I tore down a 69 440 not too long ago that had a cut to fit piece of gasket material in there. Didn’t leak. It had red RTV in the corners and the rest was covered in the gasket shellac or whatever you want to call it

Im no machinist but wouldn't removing that much material from the retainer mating surface distort the seal itself around the crank?

Fklskv I looked into the fast fish retainer and it seemed the most sensible but didn't know how feasible it would be with the motor in the car. Famous Bob who's product did you use? The Grate Ronzini maybe I should goop it up and send it!?

I put my Fast Fish in with the motor in the car. On my back. I also used their bearing retainer.

Mancini or 440 Source has nice ones. I don’t use factory 1s anymore. There is s as Lao a better Fel Pro rear seal u can get. Kim

Thanks Kim. Bought the viton rms and side seals from 440 source. Guess I should've ordered the retainer also. There are so many contradictory posts on what to do/not do, what to buy/ not buy it's tough for a noob to the rms process to figure out the right direction to go

I tried one from hughs , wouldnt fit w/ my mainstuds that I had already cut down , they took it back (good guys), i REINSTALLED THE STOCK ONE , WENT THRU THAT CRAP ABOUT 4-5 TIMES , YES LAYING ON MY BACK . Finally bought one on ebay that claimed to clear the back studs , after finding the stock one wasnt made/machined/cast centered on the crank, bolts would pull it off center when tightened .< repeating myself !
