what size mufflers for a stock 273 ? thanks.
I merged both your threads. It should streamline things.

The early A bodies are set up for single exhaust. The transmission crossmember is only notched out on the drivers side. You can have a exhaust shop bend a pipe to go under the passenger side or you can modify the crossmember to accept a pipe. There are threads here that talk about that. The stock single v8 exhaust is either the 2 barrel version or the Charger/Commando 4 barrel set up. I bought the Accurate LTD system. Not cheap but I wanted correctness for my 66.

XLERATOR® STAINLESS STEEL PERFORMANCE MUFFLERS | AP Exhaust Technologies
A friend of mine in Houston has these AP mufflers (XS1255) on his 65 Dart 273 with 2-1/4 duals to the rear bumper and it sounds amazing. Nice deep, throaty roar but not real loud either. No annoying noise inside the car either. And the price was very reasonable for him. Wish I could get a recording but the owner hates phones and such so I know he won't record it for us.

BTW your inbox is full.

Agree with grimreaper. I used these on my Valiant when I had the 273 Commando in it. Great sound!

Smokey, we tested several of the non stainless steel XLERATOR mufflers and if they still have them, the 18" long body version is perfect for the A bodies and is much quieter and to me, better sounding than the 14" ones. They used a different perforated tube pattern in the 18" long ones. They are every nice mufflers.

I think 2.25" is the smallest they make and sell.

I still have one cutaway of the shorter ones if you'd like to see it later. I can take some pictures of it and share them.

VEOTOM made an excellent point. Are you looking for a quite ride? I honestly didn’t like the sound from some the above videos. Some of them were good, others not so much. If your looking for a silent exhaust note...

The longer the case the more silencing ability the muffler has. On my ‘03 Dakota, I used a Walker sound X/FX. It is as quite as the stock unit. This is not a high performance muffler. Just a quite one. And it is long.

Ok, here is a bit of muffler testing experience. The first image is a cutaway of a 3" in and out, 14" long case XLERATOR. It is a very aggressive sounding muffler on a big engined car. Note it has fiberglass material, is straight through, and has stainless steel wrapping the center tube. As you look into it, you see a partially perforated core. In other words, part of the tube is basically a straight pipe leaving nowhere for the sound to go but out.

Here you can see I am rolling the stainless steel back to show the size of the perforations in the tube. I also have an image of the stainless steel sock that is used to wrap the center tube. it acts like filter and prevents the fiberglass from blowing out and it also does some sound energy absorption although not a lot.
this pattern is one that makes a muffler that often has an aggressive and crackly tone.

If you are looking for something really cool and innovative check out these guys. William at DR GAS is a friend of mine. He sponsored me on the show circuit last year. http://www.drgas.com/ he also has a page on Facebook, and here is a video of what my car sounds like with his setup.

Now, here is perforated core that is used in the 18" long versions we tested and it is also similar to the ones used in Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers, and others. This pattern is amazing in that it works so well for sound control, tone, and air flow. Obviously a straight through piece of pipes flows more and indeed, the one used in the 14" muffler will flow more air but the difference is only a few per cent in a typical offset center muffler, like A bodies use.
This perforated pattern, when combined with the stainless steel sock and the glass fiber packing, makes a nice, smooth sounding muffler without much crackly noise and the length of 18" lowers the over-all sound level and lowers the tendency of resonating, on some cars. A 273 will be easy to tame down and an 18" muffler with this pattern is a great choice. XLERATORS used to use this, and likely still do, and they are one of the few, other than MagnaFlow, that has an 18" muffler.

At one time XLERATORS were only made down to 2.25" I think but I need to look again.
