Was this guy a little anal?

Ok, I admit that I FK'ed up with the camera thing. I guess I should have known better, especially at my age. I just hope that this doesn't deem me as a total wretch in the eyes of my fellow forumites. I'll smooth it over with the auto wrecker guy, because I live his place, and I want to do more business with him.
No judgment from me buddy! I love taking pictures! So I completely understand. I probably wouldn't have thought about it either.

Just go back and be cool. Just remember it's his world and his rules. What is it Patrick Swayze kept sayin in Roadhouse? Be nice! LOL

Crap RRR some of your post take me back to another time and a differant world.
Edna Weeks was the woman that got Patrick Swayze into the Egyptian Arabian horses. She's also the woman that got me started in them.

From now on I'll keep the tools and the camera out of wrecking yards unless given permission, and hopefully this can be a lesson to other forumites.
Takes a big person to admit an error. Just go back and be cool and I'm sure everything will be ok.

I'm sorry to be so rough on you but anyone who owns a large yard with a lot of cars knows what kind of negative attention it can get at times, sometimes its just survival.

We're cool, and you're right. I would probably feel the same way if the shoe was on the other foot. I've had plenty of things stolen from me, and we all know it's not a good feeling.

Well how bout that? I am a big Swayze fan. He was the real deal with martial arts and not some poser. Was a real shame what happened to him.

The junkyard I used to go to this old hippy man owned he was so cool. Unfortunately he passed away 2 years ago and everything he had got auctioned and crushed. ( mostly a bodies) but anyway he had this massive rott weiler the first time I ever went there this dog stood at the door of my truck I wouldn't get out lol. He never barked or growled just stared at me. Well Buddy (the old hippy) came out of his trailer and said come on out he wont bite. The whole time this dog follows me around I wouldn't make eye contact or pet him lol finally buddy says that dog ain't gonna leave you alone till you play with him. So I got on one knee and petted him and played with him he licked me in the face a few times and went on his way lol every time I went back after that, that dog would run up to my truck waiting to be played with. Buddy was a cool dude I hated to hear if his passing. I got alot of my parts from him including the 77 charger that my 360 came out of. I sold the charger but kept the 360 all these years

Lol another flashback.

First time I ever went to look at an Arabian stallion to buy, I pull up to the front of the place and the owner is standing in front of the barn. So I get out to go see and meet him. When all of a sudden I get bumped on my right rear bun. The biggest blue black Doberman comes walking around me he just bumped me on the butt.

I had to look back to see if he took one half with him.
I like Dobermans and this one was the biggest one I've ever seen and as blue-black as you could make it. He had a great disposition. He did leave my Bunn intact.

I still have to say in all fairness that auto wreckers need to state their rules and regulations in clear terms, (maybe with a big sign at their entrance) or allow no one to enter their yard. It would make things a lot simpler. Not all of us are clear on it, and not all of us are mind readers.

When the owner found that I was taking pics, He got up in arms about that, telling me that there are too many people you can't trust and that he rather I didn't take pics.

he is right about too many people ya can't trust out there.. he doesn't know what you are doing with those pictures

I see some points here, but theres several threads here with scrapyard pics, and I bet the majority of those pics didnt get permission, myself included.
His place his rules, but...lmao with "etiquette"
You invite me for a beer...that gives me permission to piss on your property... a meal?? You know what that leads to also....

So, I’ll chime in here. If I see a car for sale, I usually stop and look it over, take pics of it, and post them in a public forum with the phone number for interested people to call if they’re interested. Only once was I called out on that practice by the owner of the car, mistakenly thinking that I was listing it as my own. My opinion is that if you’re selling a car, or in this case are a yard that is selling to the public, then pics of stuff you have should be welcomed as free advertising. If it is a closed to the public yard, then yes, proper etiquette must be followed.

Especially when that "etiquette" is not stated either verbally or written, and us dumb asses are supposed to know it, lmao

I've personally posted a butt load of pics I've taken at yards. I didn't indulge the location of the yards, but I did take pics when the coast was clear lol

I KNOW it's his sand box, and like I said, If he's worried about thieves, then SHOULD HE NOT HAVE A NO CUSTOMER'S IN THE YARD RULE???? Do I not have a valid point?
No you do not.
His property, His rules.
You're lucky if he lets you in again.

There's also a lot to be said about what else is in the pictures taken.
Addresses, phone numbers, geographical landmarks or any other location or contact information should not be in one's personal pictures.

I have offered free photo and posting service to owners before that had something they wanted to sell.
Some have taken me up on it to, and as one would expect, they asked "What's in it for you?"
I just tell them a little consideration here and there on prices is fine, but not expected.
You would be surprised how friendly they can get if you give them something that helps them.

We have a local guy with an amazing amount of all muscle car era makes and models parts yard. It is ridiculous in size and stash. He also has enough of thief’s killing his pay check. Now, you call for an appointment and you are met at the front door but never get in the office area. You pay outside and get your part.

He also doesn’t sell junk. When you get your part, it’s good to go. No half *** junk.

It is a real shame people screw these people and make it crappy for us all who would like nothing more than to just roam around and take time to get the part ourselves and maybe even learn something as you pass by it or take it out yourself.

The guy you ran into probably was “Bitten” more than just a few times and that’s why he came on stronger than needed. But the message was sent and received clearly as fine crystal.

As others have said, just go back and play it cool. You already apologized. Just be polite and smile say thanks, etc... be positive and cheerful. Tell him you’ll be back. Make him feel at ease. ThTs the best you can do. If he remains a grumpy bastard, there’s probably not much you can do. In the long run, he will see your not a bad person. Over enthusiastic maybe! LOL! But work towards that working relationship. It’ll payoff.

Private yards are not pull a parts all have their own and various rules. Their yard their rules.
I find out the rules. All is cool and I follow their rules. Not many yards even left with old stuff anymore. It is a priviledge to get into their yard (world).
Yards have always had trouble with some people walking around and pooping of emblems stealing. Some people come back later and steal whole cars!!!

Run an ad on CL for parts for sale and some thieves will come to look and later return at midnight!!

It might just be my area but, having classic yard owners that are a bit quirky (and not like the rest of normal society); is part of the fun.

I agree with just about everyone else here... it sucks but, classic car part theft is, and has been, an ongoing saga. Especially, for larger/outdoor yards. It’s hard to secure a whole lot of acreage from determined thieves and, I could see why the owner might not want their current inventory broadcasted to the interwebz.

Best way to earn their respect is by opening up your wallet each time you visit and, sharing your passion for older vehicles.

here is a typical car in question. These are all coming from an old barn by the road that has been closed for decades. The cars are being put out one by one, with a for sale sign and brief description. On the signs it clearly states to call the number and not go to the house. I post a pic of the sign because it’s out there with the car. The owner wants to sell the cars and has included his number for all to see. They aren’t on the busiest road, but I’ll bet me posting them has increased the interest in them exponentially! So far, 3 cars have been sold, and 2 more are out there. Is this considered wrong?

I say fair game since there is nothing in the pictures other than what the seller has put there for contact info.

BTW, who put that stupid hood scoop on that last car?

If there is a car for sale along the roadside, in my book it's open game to photos. If there are things behind a privacy fence, asking probably earns respect with the land owner.

Out by the road with a sign, to me is a public invite. If car is not locked, I wouldn't think twice about taking pics, opening doors, hood, whatever to inspect. If a car is right up by someone’s house, even with a sale sign I‘D do a walk around, but would normally go to their door before touching it or taking pics that might have the house or other things in them.

as of now, I have not walked up to the house, as instructed. However, if I see someone out in the yard I may stop and talk to them. There was a hopped up fox body mustang in the driveway for sale too, and the sign said call the number, don’t go to the house, and “big dog” !

And for the record, I’m dying to see what else is in the barn. For at least 20 years there was an old Nova parked outside the barn in the weeds. That disappeared over a decade ago. There was also some political statement painted on the barn for all to see, and maybe keep people away. Can’t remember what it said anymore, it washed away a long time ago!

In that case, no, I would not go to the house. I’d check out the car and only call if I was interested in buying
