So after owning my car over 40 years I've decided to paint it. It has sported the original Sublime paint. But now it's time for its first repaint, I am both excited and apprehensive I've talked to a local painter who does custom work and insurance work he has a nice shop and with the covid-19 situation has time to get it in. I will be handling the removal of the bumpers door handles marker lights spoiler Etc. The car is in great shape needs patch panels new door Strikers it will be blocked and sanded and done right. He will also be doing the trunk and door jams and will be replacing one hinge. He will be deck painting the hood . and I will be putting on the bee stripe and shooting the engine bay after the rebuild. two stage paint original Sublime. He also will be resealing the windows and a couple other small things. My question is ballpark wise how much would you pay for that work or what's the going rate.

In my area going rate is anywhere from 58 to 64 an hr. When i ran a shop i wouldnt give any restoration we did a solid number. I would ballpark a rough idea and say it could be more or less. If they agreed we would start and i would bill them monthly. This way they had time save and make decisions as the job progressed. This hourly rate doesnt include materials btw

I appreciate your comments and responses. I guess it's just hard for me to determine how many hours a job like this could take because I have never done it professionally. We settled on $6,000 it just seems like a lot of money I don't doubt his abilities or his integrity those two mean a lot but that's about $2,000 more than I was hoping

6k for an overall paint job with the patches and other things is actually a very fair price imo. As long his work is done w good quality and a warranty.

I was going to say that $10,000 would be what I would expect to see for the work your talking about.

10000 was his original number before we started working it down with me removing Chrome bumpers door handles Etc I will also be applying the that stripe to the rear

I know he won't be making a lot of money on the job but with the Coronavirus he only has one car in his shop and he can at least keep his crew working on a fun project. But the best part is I could have my car back in less than 3 weeks

Don’t rush it, give him time to perfect the work, you’ll be happier in the end.
For sure I've waited 20 years I can wait a little longer. I only mention that because I hear stories of cars getting stuck in paint shops for months and months but we talked about that already and he assured me that's not going to happen. I've also seen some of his award-winning work and come to find out we went to the same High School

And the fact that he has a full blown Hemi Pro Comp car in the corner of the shop well that was just the deal closer for me LOL

Do you know what paint they are using? What base and what clear

Sublime pp&g basecoat clearcoat is what I said I wanted, and he was in agreement but I'm definitely open for suggestions because I only know enough to be dangerous

I was also going o say at least $10,000. The old days of a really nice paint job for a few thousand dollars is over. The cost of the shop, paint booth, utilities, insurance, body work tools, tools, paint guns (most pros use good guns), etc., etc. is so high that they can't do the work cheaply any more. Also, do you know how expensive paint is? Specially PPG paint! You are looking at at least $2,500 jus in materials for a complete paint job. I painted my car almost 6 years ago, and I had almost $2,000 in materials.

Another question Paint Pros, is it standard practice in the industry to get something in writing as far as work to be done sort of a punch list I guess. I am paying $2,000 upfront and we'll be paying the rest of the job continues. So I feel pretty good about that but I just want to be on the same page as my guy. But don't want to be viewed as an ***. I guess a written estimate is the way to go?

For yourself if nothing else you should do a punch list and share it with him. My painter didn’t have any problem with it.

Yes i would definitely get a written est or agrred list for several reasons. 1 this way its a binding deal. 2nd no miscommunication. 3rd in the future if you ever have something done or pass the vehicle on 2 a family member. You will have a hard copy for the record to look back at

He should be fine with that. But you need to understand that if he uncovers rust, or some other problem, the price will go up. I think most guys like to be on the same page as their customers.
PLEASE ask him if it would be OK to take pictures periodically to post in he Restoration section of the forum. Who knows, it could mean some business for him.

I understand if unforeseen problems arise it could have an effect on the price. Owning the car for 40 years I have a real good idea of what's under that paint, I live here in Oregon they do not salt the road the car is been garage for the last 30 years has its original factory paint on it. But anything's possible. I will take photos and post them I never would have thought of that but it sounds like a great idea hopefully he's on board with that.
