Guys I am not happy but that's ok. To the point I have a 915 that a man claims is an X head. He seems honest but let's look past all that.

Looking for direct responses but is it possible for an X head to have a 915 casting number? I have been told no by someone I surely trust and he knows mopars but I want to comfirm with others.....

Thank you in advance....

Not that I have seen. All X heads I have seen are 894... I have seen a later 318 head with a small x on it, but obviously NOT a 340 head

Not in my experience. 915s are J heads only. Unless there was some experimental heads out there. But not production.

There are postings about that. If you type in "X head casting number" in the search box.

Thank you everyone. I got popped on a motor from what I thought was an honest person. Versed in some of this I am not. The guy slid one by me or so he thinks. Not happy but gonna fix it...

Thanks everyone,

The guy may have been confused by the T/A 340 head which is a 915 casting [J O U or Z]with the pushrod holes drilled differently.

can it be one head is an x head the other a head ? one of the many 340 i've bought had an x and j head on it still ran great

Many old sources for Mopar info were later found to be wrong!
I think the first Direct Connection manual I had claimed that all '68-'71 340s were X.
We later discovered that '71s didn't have the X head.
So the seller may have seen this info repeated over the years and believed it was gospel.
Hopefully not trying to deceive you! If a '71 casting it should have a 2.02 intake valve if 340 not 360.

Can we see a pic of the head in question?

That will be a little bit. The back story is I bought a motor and when I popped a valvecover off I saw the casting #915. I immediately contacted the seller and he assured me they were X heads.

So why didn't I just identify the head by the X. He said they were on his show car and they ground the outside of the heads smooth and the markings were gone. And yes the castings were smoothed. And no a 915 is not an X head number. He's the expert selling it so he can deal with it.....

Oh I blame myself for getting sucked in. There is no other excuse. However I paid good market value for the deal and the owner seemed honest. But he's gonna have to make it right or walk away scott free and that will be determined by someone who drops the Gavel. Fine with me....

Is it possible the seller believes they are X heads ? J heads (915's) fitted with 2.02's are about equivalent to the beloved X heads in performance. But I get it, you didn't get the product you thought you were buying.

Performance difference between a 2.02 915 and 894 head... about zero.

The ONLY thing that makes a X head worth anything more is to restorers, looking for that X so they will pay decent money. Yours are ground off and have no additional value in that sense. Once the valve covers are on, there is no distinguishing the two casting in the bastardized state. It's gonna run the same with a 2.02 915 or 894 head.

There are 915 heads that don't have any letter on them at all too. Some have a square block where the letter usually is. So many variants.

I get the principal, is it really worth the trouble. If it runs and you like it, get a couple bucks back for any perceived value diff (impaired with X removed) in the two heads and move on.
