I'm getting ready to put the the final paint on my air cleaner base, just need to know what is the correct for it. The inside is done in a satin black, and the outside is of course is the wrinkle, but which one of the two is the outer lip. I know it is a small detail, but I am there, so I might as well do it right. Picture of the area I am talking about.

I would think that anything that shows on the outside would be wrinkle finish. That is the way I've always done them. On the inside of the air cleaner and lid, and also under where the pie tin rides....I use PPG DP90LF epoxy primer. It dries a semi gloss black, and holds up well. On the wrinkle, I have used both the VHT, and Harley Davidson side cover wrinkle finish black.

What is the secret to achieving a consistent crinkle finish?
Brand?
Temperature?
Number of coats?
Heavy/light coats?

Appreciate guidance

The secret ? Are you ready for this ?
Its on the side of the VHT can. :)
Follow them, and you'll be good.

Thanks.
I forget what brand I used about 2 years ago
Followed instructions and had problems with inconsistent finish
Thanks again and will post results

No worries.
I've been real happy with the VHT.
I know it likes warm temps.
Read the can, you'll be good.

I'm on my third attempt on this base, I got he lid on my second try. The first time I think I tried to much time between coats. The second time I did the base first, and messed it up , but on the lid I reduced the heat on the heat gun, and it turned out good. This time on the base, I will go with the lower temp again, and hope it turns out. I'm using VHT for the record.

I have always used a heat gun after spraying wrinkle finish paint, warming the part evenly.

Well, I finished mine yesterday, so I might as well share it here. I'm mostly happy with the results, but there are flaws if you know where to look. The biggest issue is I had to use some filler in one of the dents, and it shows up no matter what I do. I'm thinking it heats up differently then the metal around it. That said, it is on the back side of the cleaner, so I am going to just leave it for now. I may just have it powder coated in the future.

To be completely anal, not hard for me. That lip is crackle and 3/16 down the inside wall. And it is a small or not pronounced crackle. If that make sense.
