If I was starting a program I would go Gen3. The old-school V8s are going to go out of style, and quickly. The Gen3 stuff you can walk in and buy like the X blocks in the 80s. Cheap (in regard to the times) and available. And fairly strong - strong enough to do what you want anyway.

What "going to go out of style" ?
Boy, you just ain't right in the head.

Yeah, the LS and the Gen III stuff has it’s issues. It’s just they are the soup de jour and the magazines want to pump them up.

It is a sad fact that Fiat has killed virtually everything performance oriented. That’s what happens when foreign company gets to own an American company.

The GM garbage is still plenty supported. Some of the Chrysler stuff is self inflicted for sure.

What YR said. I’m not in agreement with time passing, but it does. People that love these are (for the most part) are in their 50s or older. Younger enthusiasts have been buying Gen3 daily driver musclecars for more than 10 years now. They look at the old v8s as cool but nothing to build or drive every day. The market has shrunk dramatically over those same ten years. So if I’m getting into racing I’m building **** I can get and people recognize. Not to mention a good head on a big block is 300+ cfm. That’s an average head on a gen3. It’s less money, after the initial buy in, to get faster.

looks like I'm picking up a BGE block..std bore....is it worth to use a factory crank?...most likely it will be boosted...

The nice thing with Hellcat motors/engines/who gives a rat's *** is that a trans that can easily handle the power is already hooked up to it. A bodies are miles lighter than the current gen challenger so the performance would be insane. Can a body chassis handle that much power without shattering glass? I presume you'd have to do some braces.

Yes, the cfm achievable on the Gen3 is crazy. The 2
`12 on up(Eagle head) will go 330cfm without much work. Pretty darn good for something you can find in a wrecking yard. The Apache heads are over 350.
I agree with YR, Fiat gave us the finger. No blocks. If it weren't for the aftermarket it would be impossible to build anything LA.
Once parts come more available for the Gen3 hemi, and costs come down, we're going to see a lot more of them.

Gotta question you on your couldn’t build anything LA without aftermarket help. 9’s are easily obtainable with a stock block at 3000 pounds or less and not a crazy budget either.

I didn't say it was unachievable... Stock block? sure. Stock heads? happens in Super Stock all of the time, but NHRA allows Edelbrocks too but, subject to fill volumes.
A good SS/JA Duster is a mid 10 sec deal and they would be much faster if they didn't have to stay with the OE fill volume blueprints specs. Trying to stay relative here...
In the bracket world, you almost never see anyone going real fast with OE heads. it's always aftermarket. Speaking SB here.. and I'm not talking big inch SB's either. That requires a aftermarket crank. I can't remember the last time I heard of anyone using OE rods... Again, aftermarket.
Don't get me wrong. I'm supposing of throwing anyone down the stairs... I think the aftermarket has been used sooo much, it's been taken for granted anymore.

As far as the Gen3 Hemi goes, those things can go pretty darn fast without reinventing the wheel. 330 cfm heads with a stock 2.05 Int as delivered from Detroit, needs only 22° total timing, and most guys going fast only need about 240°@.050, and run completely OEM valve train. Our world has changed.

Any serious Gen3 build has its issues and limits too. When I read some of the Gen3 posts on Moparts my eyes roll like slot machines at what those guys spend to go anywhere near 9’s.

LOL
Well, you're right about that.. I saw Jeff Sherwin (?) in his 07 charger go 8.9x in Sonoma in early 2016. But that is a big inch, high dollar deal. ..and he's been chasin that for a while.

I was wrong earlier about a good SS/JA Duster... a good one will go 9.90. (again, rules)

Heck a lot of the fast Gen3 adder engines have two power adders

That power adder business is something I'll never get used to...
Power adders, USED to be better heads, better intakes, step headers, Merge collectors, and so on..
It's not a video game...

I'm old school so I think you can figure out my opinion.

And a really fat pocket book to make the dam things run right !

Heres my vote, twin turbos are tight in a A body ( mines a 67 dart), had to remove part of the inner fenders but worth it, also completely street legal. But it had a ritter block, stroker kit 428, Eddie magnum heads, super Victor intake with EFI. Mines almost ready to fire up just some small things figuring out.

Do you get to the spark plugs from the bottom? And “tight” in your case is an understatement.

I have zero desire to deal with something like that. I don’t even think I would even if I was younger but for sure not now.

Yep, I’ve lost way too much dexterity to bend around like Gumby to work on stuff.

I’d love to do something like Matts440 as long as someone else did the work on the car!!!

When someone asks for what engine to run in their A body I usually recommend a small block if you are happy with high 9’s or slower and a big block for mid 9’s and faster. Not saying you can’t do it with a small block but “budget” is always in mind.

Somebody drops by with a box of 6 large I’ll send you home with this nice core.

I hit the agree button, I sure miss the ease of working on a hemi belvedere, versus a r/b a body !!
