I have everything in place, but I can’t get the spring clip on. Looking at it, it appears the clutch rod doesn’t want to lay flat against the pedal. It’s hitting the firewall. What could be the problem?

Important to note that I didn’t take this clutch rod off. It fell off when I took it off the z-bar, so it wasn’t clipped when we bought it.

Start at the top and work your way down.
My guess is your Z-bar is misaligned.
If your car was not originally a manual-trans car, then the outboard Z-bar pivot may not be in the exact right spot.

The Z-bar should be parallel to the ground and at 90* to the centerline of the car. The downrod should be in the center of the firewall window laterally, and stay there, and the Z-bar pivots control that. The Z-bar bushings should be anchored at one end with a wire-retainer such that the bar cannot move laterally. Only after you get that corrected can you install the adjuster into the TO fork.

Not even trying to attach it to the z bar yet. Just the pedal. It is hitting the firewall hole on the outside/driver-side of the hole... like the pedal is coming out of the support.

I will. I also looked at the firewall hole again. It looks like the rod was riding in the firewall for awhile. I’ll get pictures

So I fixed it. Took some heat, but I tweaked the pedal end of the rod ever so slightly. Was able to get the spring clip in, attack to the z-bar, and not contacting the firewall. Thanks for the input guys!
