Especially depending on which spring is missing.:D
When I mod distributors I take out the "garage door" spring and replace it with one Mr Gasket 925B spring.
All in mechanical timing by about 2,500 RPM.
I'll bet his is coming in at idle, or even letting the initial timing jump around at idle if it's any more than 700 or so.
