I have a 72 Demon 440 4 speed. I decided last night to dig in and look the car over. Plus take care of some issues I have been neglecting. As I am looking around I find I have a broken motor mount stud. I am currently running solid motor mounts.

I am curious to what other guys are running for motor mounts with the big blocks? I d like something that will hold up as well. A motor plate is not out of the picture but not my first choice.

I’d try to figure out what broke that stud. Those things are pretty bulletproof.

If you use an engine plate you’ll need to get some kind of fore/aft engine limiters on it. The transmission mount won’t be enough. Room is at a premium trying to fit engine limiters correctly in there.

Something had to load that stud to make it fail. Once the nut is torqued the stud is in tension on acceleration. I suppose at some point the nut could have been over tightened and it failed over time.

Me personally, if I have the option I run solid mounts. If you have a spool Mount K member you are pretty much stuck with Poly mounts. In fact, I’m changing out the spool Mount K member on my 73 Dart Sport because I detest not being able to use a solid mount. Especially with a clutch. You can feel the engine moving.

Thank you. It is an old solid mount from my dads 72 Duster he had in the 80s. I am sure it just wore out, I hope anyway. My car is a factory slant 6 car. So I do not have the spool mounts.

It would be fairly simple to turn the spool mount into a solid mount...

I looked into it, and it wasn’t worth it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I detest the spool mount not only because it’s more difficult to get a solid mount, I can’t stand the crappy design.

That makes you about the only person who hates the design. It is much better than the biscuit mount and if you think making one into a solid mount is hard then...

LOL. I know way more people who don’t like it than do. I can make up something for a solid mount but why? I don’t like the design. I think it’s junk. If you like it then...

A torque strap is a must. A very wise investment with either mount.
We use a plate on the race car.

I'm running Shumacher mounts along with their torque bar hold down..I can supply pics if needed..Where did you find solid mounts for a big block A body or did you make them?

Thank you. I made my own. This time around I plan to make a better looking setup if I go with a solid mount again.
The Schumacher setup appears to be a quite stout package and it all is very neat and well made..I see you live in Canton, SD..I lived in Sioux Falls for 2 years and used to load in Canton a lot
at a plant that made parts for Bobcats and Kubotas I believe...

First , why are you running solid mounts on the street ? Your asking for something to break . Second , the left side mount is trying to separate itself while the right side is being squeezed to death .. suggest , rubber mounts and a torque strap . You can make a strap for less than $45.00 .

I will look into the Schumacher setup. What headers are you running?

Yes, depending on the two years you loaded there. It is currently called Adams Thermal Systems. McCord and Behr were the previous names.

I'm running the 2 inch TTI's...Everything is tight..
I ran there between 2008 and 2010.

Never broke a thing running solid mounts on the street. Ever.
