when things hooked up well ,only thing that held things together was the sway bar . car has frame connectors and cheater slicks . drove it 30 miles to the shop in that condition , drove slow , real slow

Well, at least it wasn't the other end of the spring!!!! Time for reinforcements, or sliders,.....:)

That's not too much torque. That's metal rot.

I'm not seeing rust there, that looks like metal fatigue. With that shiny new nut and bolt, I'd suspect that the old fastener was loose/missing and allowed that area to flex on the upper bolt. I'm just guessing from here. Good Luck, make sure it gets welded and gusseted. You may want to invest in some torque boxes as well. .02

Yeah that looks like it had been coming for awhile. I don’t see any significant amount of rust either. I wonder if that shackle isn’t frozen up too. What springs?

You don't see rust there? Seriously? I sure as hell do.

I'm with him, I don't see any significant rust there. There's a little flash on a couple of the edges, and then shiny edges. To me, it looks like it's been oil-canning for awhile, with some of the metal failure being old which is why it has a little flash rust on the bare surface. Then there's the bright shiny edges from the acute failure. I would bet that there was a couple of cracks there before that led to the failure when it hooked this time around.

I would be curious about the shackle, and whether or not it's frozen up. And then there's that bright shiny nut that says one of the bolts on the hanger was replaced recently. If the hanger had been moving around that would help explain the weakened metal. IMO that's a fatigue failure.

THAT surface rust car had been sitting for over 2 weeks in the parking lot before the pic was taken . everyting was solid , the bushings were changed 6 months prior to this happening .
what is oil canning ? Made new boxes both sides , fixed by a welder that does aircraft work , i'm sure the new boxes are stronger than new . Springs are stock 340 springs think 6 leaf not 100percent sure

there is not that much rust , that is the most rust i've seen on the car . and that is probably from sitting in the parking lot for 2 weeks had a bit or rain , that is the most rain the car has ever seen , these old cars rust quickly if exposed to water .i'm sure 50 years and metal fatigue played a roll as well
