You don't see rust there? Seriously? I sure as hell do.

I'm with him, I don't see any significant rust there. There's a little flash on a couple of the edges, and then shiny edges. To me, it looks like it's been oil-canning for awhile, with some of the metal failure being old which is why it has a little flash rust on the bare surface. Then there's the bright shiny edges from the acute failure. I would bet that there was a couple of cracks there before that led to the failure when it hooked this time around.

I would be curious about the shackle, and whether or not it's frozen up. And then there's that bright shiny nut that says one of the bolts on the hanger was replaced recently. If the hanger had been moving around that would help explain the weakened metal. IMO that's a fatigue failure.
