I have my A833 out of the car and have been thinking about what I should be replacing while it is easier to work on.

I saw some stuff on Brewers site that I'm wondering about. Thought I would get some opinions.

1- Side cover gasket. Is this a problem area for leaking? I have no idea if the current gasket is original or has been replaced at some point.
2- Extension housing tail shaft gasket. Is this a problem area for leaking? If I unbolt the tail section, will it just slide off over the output shaft?
3- Gear shift lever shaft o-ring. Do these normally fail over time?

Thanks for the advice.

Any leaks now?

Unfortunately, that is an unknown variable. I purchased the trans from a local guy and have not installed it yet. I had a look for obvious discoloration lines that might have been previous leaks, but didn't see any.

Honestly with quite a few a-833 under my belt, only leaks I’ve seen over 35 years in this hobby is leaking tail shaft seals. Just buy a new gasket kit And bearing kit from Brewers and call it a day. If your forks are brass and still in one piece you can upgrade to steel. And unless your doing a complete rebuild due to metal in the bottom and oil or broken parts, those transmissions are really good pieces. JMHO.

Gaskets are usually good forever. I wouldn't replace O rings unless leaking or if you take the trans apart. Then rear bushing and seal also. At that point you would want to take it all apart and check everything.

All 'O' rings and gaskets are potential leaks. Don't forget the front seal if you want to keep oil off of your clutch. Have commonly seen shift shaft 'O' rings leak. Rear seal and bushing is a problem area. If I were you, just for my peace of mind, I would completely reseal, clean-up and paint.

This is interesting, it doesn't read like he has ever been into an 833. I see an education coming.
