If we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic, you should totally be using your sons PO Box in Blaine. If you have Nexus, it’s even more of a no brainer. Only consider having small, light items shipped across the border to your door if you need them in a hurry but still expect to pay a premium.
Of course the border is closed now, and frankly I wouldn’t want to venture across the border any time soon even if it was open.
I’ve been waved thru many times without paying. Only time in recent memory I had to pay was when I brought across the Legendary upholstery kit for my Scamp. I knew I’d have to pay the taxes since I was over $1k.
