Bare Bones Budget 400 Build

-
I plum forgot to upload my second video. It's just showing my crankshaft soakin box I made so I can soak the crank in vinegar to get the rust off. I also show the crank too. It's short and is uploading now.

Here's the crank cleaning video. Hopefully it works. Like I said in the last video I found out Brewers sells a modified flywheel that'll work with the cast crank, so I hope it cleans up. We'll see.

Sub'ed....

As to the rebalancing question...I picked up a '68 383 short block the other day, and come to find it has a 400 crank in it. Rods are the same, cast or forged, through entire "B" engine model run. It was rebuilt by an engine rebuilding company, and did run at one point, so I'm gonna use it as is (new bearings, of course), using cast damper and weighted converter. Also, gonna use '516 heads to bump comp a bit.

That'll be a 10:1 engine with these pistons in it and a .021" head gasket.

So, if you were going to re use a cam, would you clean it up the same way with 400 grit and oil??

I have an engine (318) and I replaced the cam bearings but decided to re use the cam. So I didn't want to put a used surface against a brand new bearing, so how should I clean up the cam or not.....

??

Better go ahead and break down and get the 275DEH, the true "B engine Magic Cam." LOL. It doesn't care about compression or exhaust manifold restriction or short stroke. :)

wow I just got to the party, I know the food's all gone but is there any beer left? good stuff keep it coming

Is the upload taking forever because of a slow IP or is YouTube just that slow????

It takes me quite a bit to upload a 2-3 minute video, but I thought it was just my internet connection.
If you're using the web browser Edge, YouTube is really slow.

Chrome responds very well to YouTube

Chrome is what I am using. It took about 12 hours to upload one. I think it was 9 minutes long? Hell I don't remember. Whichever is the longest so far.

It'll never run, not enough compression, cam too big, running a TR with 2 1050's, stock exhaust manifolds... should be good for 1000hp...

Just build it and use what you got.

How to install connecting rod bolts video up next. Uploading now.

How to install rod bolts.

Next: How to clean piston ring lands and install rings.

Here it is after rod bolts installed, ring lands cleaned and pistons rung. I make good use of lawn and leaf bags. Piston ringing video still uploading. It will be sometime tomorrow.

Oh and here's the crankshaft. I don't know if you can tell, but it's already come a long way.

I'm sorry. I missed this. No, I would not use emery cloth or sandpaper. Yes, I would clean it the same way, but use some 000 steel wool to remove the rust after the vinegar bath. You can literally scrape the rust off with your fingernail after the vinegar bath.

I am sold on the vinegar rust removal. This is after 24 hours. It'll live! Check it out Roy! @SGBARRACUDA

Can clean up your cam bearing surfaces on your cam with Crocus Cloth, it's a really fine grade of emery cloth. Really leaves a nice polished finish behind, use it with WD-40.

RRR Success
Looking nice, that vinegar leaves them in a really raw state and they flash rust immediately after the distilled water wash and rinse. A quick once over with a scotch brite and WD-40 will clean up the flash rust, shine it up and protect it from rusting, now you are ready to polish it when it works out to do it.

Very Nice . . .

I think "success" is an understatement with this one! lol
