So took a pair of 587 heads i had on shelf to machine shop this weekend and no go.. so my question is have this fresh 360 short block 0.060 over, fresh 318 heads(pictured). how shitty will this thing run with the stock cam? can i run a mild cam with the 318 heads and stock springs or would that not even matter? i cant afford aluminum heads or any other expensive heads right now so i was thinking of just running the 360 as is till i can afford and swap later because my 318 is wore out...

yalls opinions please

I bought my Speedmaster aluminum heads for $800 to the door in September I think it was they had the sale. I have more than that into my factory heads that I took off.... I noticed you have a new wanted ad as well. You'd be lucky to get a good running set of 360 heads for under $400 or 500 plus shipping.. then one has to think 800 for brand new heads aluminum... I know personally I wouldn't let my head's go for under 600 because I have much more than that in them....
But I doubt anybody would pay that much for them plus shipping so I'm just going to have to keep them and put them on another project....

I guess I don't know what's being asked.

this is a 360 block, i wanting to know how bad the 318 heads will choke it down the 360 because the 360 heads i had are a no go to be repaired..

you'll lose higher rpm flow. It will run good, but won't perform optimal. Stock 318 heads have no problem handling a .455 lift cam. In fact, I've gone .474 with stock 318 heads. You lose lift in factory geometry. IF you go over .455 lift, be sure and check the clearance of coil bind and that your keepers/retainers don't bottom out on the guide- with room for the valve seal

I would say throw your 318 heads on there if they're going to cost you nothing for the rest of the summer and then look at the Speedmaster heads and save for Black Friday. I got mine in September for 30% off at $800 to the door and 318 got his on Black Friday that 40% off for $700 to the door. both of us have ran them pretty much out of the box with a little bit of checking. And both of us are having good results...

Why are the heads a “no-go”?

No way would I use a 318 head on that. I wouldn’t use a 318 head on a 318.

There is a fairly long thread on this very topic in this very forum.

Find another pair of heads. The 318 heads shouldn’t be an option.

Which is a deal. I think I paid $450 just for the raw castings. I think I have $1200 total into them after porting, hardware and setup.

And still not tearing up the streets of Portland... Trying to make it up to Abby's pizza tomorrow night..

they want as much to rebuild the 587 heads as it would cost me for a pair of speedmaster aluminum heads... $950 and thats with me supplying new valves, the correct springs, seals, locks and retainers

So what? They need guides and a valve job? I have yet to see a set of heads Id let out the door with the valve job it came within. Not one.

So there is nothing wrong with the castings, they just need to be rebuilt.

Why new valves? Are yours junk? Or do you not want 3/8 stems? Not sure why you think you need aftermarket retainers. A set of springs for what you sound like you are doing is pretty cheap.

Im just trying to get my head around what you are doing.

I suppose given what you've posted, I’d pick the SM heads, but they would get a valve job. And probably a surface. Most of all new heads don’t have that flat of a surface.

I would say no go on the 318 heads if you're looking for a performance motor. the 318 heads would raise the compression due to its small combustion Chambers but it would be a low RPM show. Keep looking there are other options for decent heads popping up all the time with the price of aluminum heads dropping good cast-iron rebuilt low mileage heads are becoming fairly prevalent

More machine shop Boogeyman BS...
Every machine shop or someone who owns machining equipment on this forum recommends work being done...
I took my head's to a reputable machine shop and they gave him back to me relubricated... Said the valve job was fine and they were flat as can be... I'm having no leaking issues just horsepower improvement...

Wow they're offering the free intake again?.. they took that away for a little bit. People were buying those at 40% off for like $135 then out here on the farm selling them again for 180 plus shipping... if you're really taking it under consideration I would wait till mid September and see if they have their 30% off sale again. I just have their site on a app on my phone so I can check them on a daily basis...
Being able to look back on it I would have never spent a dime on my cast-iron heads had I had this option...

has anyone ever used the Aerohead racing heads? $499 set up with .600 springs already.. they are manufactured castings supposedly... same company that does the Indy 440 heads and the LAx small block heads

Yes good plan, I moved away from my good but tired X heads 4 years ago and went with the Speedmaster headset that time I also bought them on Black Friday I have been very happy with them
