Hey guys want to pick your brains a bit. I'm thinking of building a 2wd pulling truck (I know Not A Body) for next season. The engine has to be all cast iron: heads, intake, and block. You are allowed to run an aftermarket carb, headers, and cam. So my question is what's the best of the best BB parts to use? Not allowed hemis and max wedge stuff is too expensive. So whats the best years parts to look for? What would make the most HP/TQ? Let me know whats your opinions on this.

Do they check cubic inches.....bore & stroke? Porting/polishing? Aftermarket cam allowed to have adjustable rockers and be solid or roller?

Stroke a 400 to 451, all iron. 400s are still fairly cheap. 440 stroke with a 400 bore biggest of both stock worlds.

Off the top of my head (I don't claim to be a B/RB expert, and I don't play one on TV):
Early 440 block ('66-'67 IMS) because of reinforcement ribs on the outside of the crankcase, possibly heavier casting all the way around.
"Six Pack" (HP1?) crank/rods/balancer (Heavier, I know; but you're looking to build torque with this motor, not spin the RPMs into the stratosphere).
902 heads, porting up to you. Or any of the "Stage" heads from DC/MP if they consider those "factory".
Early (late 50s-early 60s) factory solid tappet adjustable rocker gear.
Hemi pan (or not, since it's going into a truck) and 1/2" pickup tube.
Mid '70s iron TQ intake with a big old TQ on it.

Usually there are other rules for these classes.
Like:
Displacement, valve lift, compression ratio, pump gas, mufflers, idle vacuum, hyd cams only, no porting, carb size limit, stock valvetrain.......some mix n match of those things, etc.

Depending on how the rules are structured...... it usually ends up being a BBC or BBF show.

It's basically a street 2wd class. Pump gas and DOT tires only. I think as long as your under the ci limit your fine. Guess it's like a super stock class?

What sanctioning body/rule book and what's the cubic inch limit? Is it a claimer class like the oval track guys run? I'm on board with a long arm 400 (or even a 383, if the cubic inch limit requires it). Lots of block rock and porting everything to the moon, if allowed.

Well it's still up in the air on rules. I'm pretty sure its 480ci limit

383 .030 over with a 4.15 inch crank for 478 cubic inches (.040 over makes right at 480) or 400 with 4-3/8 bore and 3.92 inch crank for a tick over 470. Big Chevy aluminum rods are pretty much standard here, and it’s also advisable to use aluminum main caps with studs. Detonation is a matter of “when“ instead of “if” your limited to iron heads and pump gas when your almost stalling it out from WOT at full rpm. Old 915 1967 closed chamber heads with the close to 906 head ports might would be okay, but optimal (if you could get by with it) would be some iron INDY heads.
Here’s a little food for thought I had read some time ago. Not that you could pattern your build exactly like it, but still informative enough to give some ideas.
