Late model timing cover interchangeability

Unless you're South of the border the truck you grabbed the cover off of was either '87 or older or a swap. '88 and up US market trucks had the 3.9 V6 instead of the /6. No matter though...

The timing pointer is in a different spot on later motors. You can just mark TDC to match the new pointer on your original damper. It's best to have the head off to get an accurate mark but it's possible to do it with the head on too, pick your favorite method.
