Looking to replace my steering box on my 74 Swinger. Question, how does the steering shaft come apart from the gearbox? Does it just slip off after I unbolt it?

Using a large flat end drift punch, tap the big roll pin out where the steering shaft coupling fits to the upper aft end of the gear box. Then slide the coupling back. you may need pry bars and penetrating oil to get this coupling to slide back. Sometimes you need to loosen the bolts holding the column up under the dash and loosen the bolts holding the column to the fire wall. (Loosen not remove) this will allow you to slide the column back to gain clearance to get the coupling off. This coupling has a female master spline. Your gearbox will have a male master spline it only goes back on one way. Use antisieze compound on the splines when you put it back together to make it easier to dissassemble if you ever have to pull it apart again.

Hope this helps

you might want to, at least, get a new seal for the coupler, it wll probably be torn when you mess with it.
