I've been looking in here for a while and finally took the plunge. I don't have an A body but I do have a 318 and 904 and a load of dumb questions.
The combo is due to go into a British Humber Hawk from 1960.

Welcome to FABO!! You came to the right place for info on the 318/904.

Lots of very knowledgeable folks willing to help.

I spent 3 years at Greenham Common in Berkshire back in the 80's. Loved my time there.

well this has potential...

Kursplat, that is so close.
This is mine.
It currently has a Rover (Buick) 215 and 5 speed but I'm no fan of the 215. The chance of a 318 and 904 came up so I grabbed it.
The factory built 6 prototype V8 Hawks in the 60's using 318 polys and 273 Commandos so I'm just continuing their good work.

Depending upon the curb weight of the Hawk, a warmed over 318 should make it a screamer vs the 215 Buick.

Welcome aboard! Interesting car. A V8 should make that quite enjoyable.

3K pounds is pretty good.
Do your best in keeping the engine light with aluminum parts. I don’t know what the Buick 215 weighs in at but the MoPar engine has an aluminum front cover and W/P. Mostly the later years, not the early years.

What transmission do you have?

904, rebuilt with Alto red clutch packs, kolene steels and a Transgo stage 2 kit. Converter is undecided as yet, I have 2 but both had not been stored correctly before I acquired them in with the engine and box. I wouldn't trust them not to trash my box.

Then select one to be opened up and gone through to be built for exactly what’s needed.
